Metallica gear from AJFA

Re: Metallica gear from AJFA

my friend got a VHS copy from a penpal in Denmark that's got a lot of bootleg Metallica studio sh#t on it, including a LOT of stuff from the AJFA recording sessions. I know most of you won't believe this, but all the guitars and bass were recorded DIRECT, no mic'd cabs. Hetfield and Hammett used their usual Boogie Mk IIC+, modded Marshall Plexi heads, and various rackmount preamps (I recognized an ADA MP-1 and Boogie Quad), but through direct-boxes, tube mic preamp/compressor units, then straight into the board. Jason used rackmounted Ampeg and Ashley bass preamps, no big heads or bass cabs. all direct.

on the vid, Hetfield and producer Rasmussen and some engineer talked back and forth about getting away from the big slick guitar wide-open sound of Ride and Master, and getting the tightest and "cleanest" and focused crunch and lead tone that they could, and going direct was the option they chose. I never saw Hammett in any of these discussions, but he complained alot after doing take after take of his solo for Blackened that his tone sounded too tiny and compressed.

personally, I can't stand the sound of this album. the guitars sound too focused like a laser beam and are as dry as sandpaper, the electric bass is non-existant, and the drums are wayyyy too loud (like Slayer's South of Heaven). this is a tight and punchy album, however, and sounds good through a good car audio system with subs :)

also, a funny thing on this video.....Lars had some "help" when laying down the drum tracks for AJFA. his drum tech wore dishwashing gloves and did a lot cymbal chokes for Lars on some of the songs, especially Dyer's Eve. :laugh2:

And 3 cent heroes .. I'm pretty sure that kirk and james used the same modded marshall for all the songs on Kill'em all , on AJFA they used Mark IIc+'s and the rhythm was heavily scooped...

im pretty sure the kill em all marshall was stolen during the ride the lightning tour, so they went on a search for one just as good which is when they stumbled on the boogie mkIIc+. so definately dont think it was the same marshall

Good little bit of info... and I'm not surprised about the direct recording... It definitely accounts for the dry, focussed, tight sound.

A agree about the bass. As many times as I listened to this album I can never hear what Jason Newsted is doing. The only time I can hear him is on live stuff. I read an old Guitar World magazine last night that had a letter calling the two bass players in Metallica "noiseless shadows." and somewhere on that gear site it mentions Jason and James arguing cuz his guitar ate up all the lows.

I heard that during the recording of Dyers Eve, the band members couldn;t keepo up with themselves and the song had to be recorded in 30-second bursts. Is that true?

Could be... The first time they EVER played that song live was at the start of the current tour now..So it sounds like they probobly couldn't..

I was there in Seattle and they finished with DE, and they played it beautifully. To me, even though a believer to this assumption at first, it doesn't seem possible to not be able to play it years ago, but be able to now? I would think that as age progressed, it would be harder to perform as quickly.

yeah, its all underneath on cunning stunts. s&m theyre probably just somewhere offstage to the side or somethin

One of Kirk Hammett's old guitar techs to me that they actually travel with huge isolation boxes for their cabs, which are miked inside and then go to the mains. He said you can fit a lot of beer in those things.

Also, does anyone know which pickup is in the bridge for James' guitars. Everything says it's an EMG 81/60 set, and I would assume that the 81 goes in the bridge. Is that true?

Re: Metallica gear from AJFA

Alex Lifeson also uses isolation cabs like that for his rig, which is a multi-amp setup. He sez they're lead-lined and all of them together weigh about a ton.

James's pups are EMG 81 bridge 60 neck, so you were right in assuming that.

Oh and thanks guys for all your input about the AJFA sound.
