Metallica gear? Load?

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

Load tone was good, the only awesome tone that was on it was on "until it sleeps" Threre are three great tone albums metallica had: Ride the Lightning, Muster of Puppets, Metallica(black) Kill them all was to buzzy, Justice way too thrashy and tipical of the Bay Area sound of back in the day. Reload was nothing speciall, St.Anger is total garbage, from songwriting and tone perspective, wanna be different fine do it if you can, but don't be different for the sake of being different by just doing stupid $#!^ and that's what Bob Rock, James and Lars did on St.ANger

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

"Hero of the Day" has some nice chugga chugga tones going on. Also, Hetfield's solo tone in the ending of "The Outlaw Torn" is to die for! :fing2:

I think Ride The Lightning's tone is pretty bad though, much worse than Kill 'em All which is very tight and crunchy; the rhythm has way too much gain, and it lacks a bit more treble; sounds muffled and too smooth for a rhythm tone.

I don't identify a scooped Mesa tone with "Bay Area thrash" tone though...

Ok, I guess than Hetfields tone on "Call of Kutulu" and Kirks on his intro solo to Fade to Black is "petty bad" tone. I had a ton of demos from a friend who knew all these guys in thrash bands in the late eighties from San Jose to Menlo Park, Concord and the tone was pretty much what it was on JFA. In a way, St.Crap is a clone of JFA. After MOP Metallica were it !!! a band that can release anything and it would still go platnum, however if they were to do a typical thrash record it would sell million times over due to the fact that there was a hot genre with very blue-print like sound perfect for metallica. I am sure that's what happent to St.Anger, some record exec had a few drinks with Lars and Bob and convinced them that if they one-finger metal record they would sell a million copies with out a problem.

The Load tone is the same as Reload. They were both recorded at the same time.

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

I did not say that Reload was the same kaka that St.Anger is, it just did not do much for me tone wise .... really like "Fuel" though as a song.

Re: Metallica gear? Load?

i stopped listening to Metallica in the early 90's... in the 80's i was pretty big fan... Master Of Puppets and the 1982 first album i loved.. i still listen to those a little bit... So i'm out of date as far as any of their newer stuff..

But what i'll add is it was shocking just how much gear they use in the studio... old strats, LP's, Jacksons, ESP's, Marshall, Mesa, and various other goodies.... after seeing some behind the seens in the studio video it would be extremely hard to figure out what they used... I saw for the black album on a few tunes they did some overdubs with a Danoelectro that just seemed to add the right tone to the massive wall of overdubs... Studio tones i have stopped trying to achieve a while back....

something with production/mixing definately makes them sound different. the load tone is great, but i love it on reload. though my favorite may be on garage inc.
