Metallica Unforgiven, clean solo tone.

Just wondering if the clean solo just before the lead takes off was played on active pickups as James and Kirk do use EMG's and Kirk has an HSS emg set.
I really really love that clean tone.
Thanks

They used way more guitars than their on stage ESPs and many different amps. I have a picture of Kirk with a white hollow body Gretsch. That album was a huge experimentation. Wiki might have something on what was used for each song. I'm too lazy to look.

I am not sure that they have used for unforgiven but I have heard another forum member mentioning the other day that they used a Roland jc120 amp for the nothing else matters sound. It might be the amp they have used for unforgiven also.

one of the best sounding metal albums ever
raw, huge, layered, all weapons used in the making.

Re: Metallica Unforgiven, clean solo tone.

Am I alone in not liking that album's production overall?

It sounds way too slick and overdone. Plus the guitar tone is buzzy as hell.
Feels like a bunch of racks running sequences at the same time IMO, not like 4 guys playing.

I'll take the crude, more basic production in Master of Puppets anyway of the week, soundwise.

Anyway, on topic: No idea on how to help you with that, but it does sound like a Strat on position two or something.
And being so superclean, I imagine a Roland JC120 is part of the recipe. And those active EMG single coils.
It has a lot of delay too.

Also, I think I hear a small hint of phaser in that tone too.
