A colleague formerly of Music Player Network (Guitar Player, etc.) informed me today that Musicians Friend formed a wholly owned group called Harmony Central LLC which purchased Harmony Central.com on June 10. My friend will be heading up sales and marketing for the site.

He told me that MF wants to stay in the background and keep the site independent. Expect the infuse of cash to bolster the look, navigation and content of the site.

Interesting, eh?

Soon Guitar Center will control White House, Congress and Supreme court. Schools will teach the history of Guitar Center and "God Bless Guitar Center" will be the new anthem.

it might get worse if it only releases 'news' and 'reviews' written by the people who write their catalog. or that features only stuff they carry (with direct links, no doubt, to the order form).

i never really trusted the reviews on that site... seemed too good for some of them.. thast why i look here

its not the reviews i read, it is the technology news on the front page. i think it might just turn into a giant MF catalog there.

everyone pick a negative review on the site, and look out for it hehe - should be interesting to see if MF screens them!

I thought I'd heard a sucking sound......

HC's a great resource if you learn hwo to read between the lines. Only about 1 in 10 reviews are credible at face value. I tend to discount any review by anyone under the age of 30 and with certain select words in the reviews.

That reminds me of a thread I wanted to start- what are some good sites for non-amateur reviews of gear?

I'm actually sick of HC to the point where I really can't stand sifting through the 100 badly written ones for 2 halfway decent ones. And then there's those people that turn it into a forum where they waste a whole entry just to talk crap to a previous reviewer. I love those people that say things like, "the amp is a 100 watt tube amp, but it's just not loud enough for me," as if there's a 500 watter out there they've been eyeballing.

I don't mind the gear reviews, at least I don't mind wading through them all in an effort to sift out the valuable ones. With enough reviews, you can get a pretty good general sense of what the product is all about.

As a person getting into the amp building business, reviews of your first few amps can be very valuable. As far as I can tell, there are no other review sites out there like HC. Good bad or ugly, they are pretty much the biggest game in town.

Tell the truth, when you hear about some piece of gear and you don't recognize the company, don't you do a quick HC search for some reviews? I know I do. Sometimes I just do it to get the website.

The place can't just go down the crapper since I really dont' think it can get any crazier there than it already is. I'm also guessing MF didn't have to pay all that much for the place.

I really love Harmony Central. I guess I'm alone in that here though by the sounds of things. Sure, the reviews aren't exactly the defining word on everything guitar related. But I think having to sieve through all the rubbish can be very educational to younger players like me, who don't have the hands-on experiance of some of you veterans. I can honestly say that Harmony Central reviews have taught me more about the world of guitar than any other single online source. I don't mean to bash this place, it's just I haven't been comin here very long. But like Scott F says, everytime I hear about a botique pedal maker for the first time, or am thinking about buying anything guitar related I always, always check it out on Harmony Central first.

More than anything else though, I think I haven't bought something because of what I've read on HC, rather than have bought it. Does that make sense? For example, I was dead set on buying a Line 6 DL4 until I checked it out on HC and the sheer volume of people saying there were reliability pronlems changed my mind. Where else would you get a that sort of information? I don't think you could if not for Harmony Central.

There are 4 DL4s in my band, and all 4 are woking great. It is a great pedal, which does a lot more than all other delay pedals out there.
