Mick thomson soloist passive swap options and opinions

Looking for opinions on a passive pickup for the bridge. Just looking for something new and different. I don't really use the neck so no real concern about that besides just matching the neck to the same look once I decide on a bridge. Probably go with a jazz or something depending. Currently I own a blackened black winter and a tb6. I like the black winter over the tb6 by alot only because the distortion is too trebly or just to noisy or messy sounding. Ultimately the emg 81 is my favorite but would like more options to play with. I find myself making my katana preamp eq look like a sad face. I really like honing in on the mids but this is pretty new to me as I used to be a no mid guy lol. I don't know much else other then Metallica mainly but attempt other similar sounding music. 80s thrash is Ultimately the tone I enjoy but like the modern styles as well. I play in E standard. I took the stock actives out and put the 81/85 set in the day I got it. I just thought I loved emg more. Those emty pickups are pretty sick actually.

Thanks for any replies. I love actives but really want to find a couple more passives for some variety amongst my guitars. Otherwise I'd just make them all emg 81s or the mick thomson sets. Honestly that's boring once that started to happen in my collection. Also.. would the cream/black zebra style look funny on my guitar or do I stick to just white or Black? I recently put a cheaper set of zebras into an ibanez and I really liked the look. Not home right now or I would share some photos if I could. Tell me your opinions please!

I would like to add that this happens to be my most expensive guitar I've ever owned so it's a little more special then the other 6. All the others were around 350 and under or something like that. I guess I buy cheaper guitars and just mod them cus I really like to tinker and I'm poor lol.

If you are saying you like mids (and heavy music), I doubt any of the scooped-sounding pickups like the Custom would work. If you hadn't already had the Black Winter, I'd suggest that, but if you like upper mids too, the Nazgul is a great pickup for that.

Thanks man. The nazgul has had my eye since I discovered it but just made other choices. And yes I do own a blackened black winter and its great. I don't mind a bassy pickup but the distortion pickup seems to be more bassy to me. And in certain guitars I really don't like how trebly the distortion is. It's great but yeah. The attack isn't the same either in my opinion. The attack on the distortion is thicker then the black winter. I'm learning more and more about my amps 10 band eq and it's pretty awesome. I just want more pickups to mess around with and hopefully keep it in this guitar "soloist".

I have only tried actives in this particular guitar. The passives I have I've used in ny 2 different dinkys and my js32 king v. The distortion was originally in nybred Jackson dinky. See profile picture. Now emg81. The black winter sounded HUGE in the king v but now the king v has yhe mick thomsons. Lol. I like to tinker and tune.

Actually... I bought that black winter AND distortion from sweetwater/ebay on separate occasions after speaking with specifically you on here. Lol.. probably helped me in some way with my emgs too. Thank you for your time

I have an X2N around, and I honestly never liked it. I only tried it in my Les Pauls, though. But I always thought it was darker and bassier than I was expecting it to. I first got it thinking it would sound like Death. And I guess it would if I had an alder/maple guitar through a Valvestate amp. But through my rig, it's just too blunt and kinda loose.

But honestly, in E Standard, you can afford to have a little bassier and darker pickups, IMO.

If you like the 'Winter, I would also suggest the DiMarzio Dominion. It's kinda along the lines, but much lower output, and with the DiMarzio kinda awww mids. It's a cool pickup for sure. Really tight, and same kind of emphatic attack as the Winter. I'd honestly call it a 'Winter lite.

I've always wanted to try the EMTY pickups, myself. But what's always stopped me is the whole association with Slipknot. I did try the Jim Root EMG's because I found them for cheap. I wasn't expecting much, but they were killer, actually.

I might like the emty better then the 81 but I need more time lol.thabks for the input! Dimarzio I'm not as familiar with as far as names and stuff but I'm open to look at or research whatever people have to suggest for metal.

The Dominion is the signature pickup for the Lamb of God guy.

Oh ok I didn't know and I really don't know anything about those guysbbut that's ok lol. U never heard of the dominion. Will have 5o checkout comparisons or something sometime here my current collection 20230510_200850.jpg

Since the MT has mounting-rings/bezels for the pickups I will proceed in suggesting an Invader set. If it was a direct-mount guitar I might not, due to the possible hassle.

The Invaders have those huge hex-head poles that stick up closer to the strings, so you must be able to back-off the pickup to get them set properly, not to mention they have strong magnets.

Anyways, the invader bridge is a great fit for that specific guitar model and the standard tuning with 9-gauge. Invader will give it heft and some of the compression you like with actives.
