You can gig with either one through a 4x12. I gigged a Micro Dark in a heavy rock band with another guitarist using a Rockerverb 100 and a bassist using an SVT with an 8x10. Great for small shows, sketchy shows, and as an emergency backup.
You do get a lot of extra 'something' with an all-tube amp, though. The all-tube version is definitely superior in sound quality.
If i were you, I'd invest in an Orange 4x12 or 2x12 and a Micro Dark, then save up up and get an AD30, Rockerverb, Thunderverb or Dual Dark head to be your 'main amp.' The Micro will work fine and sound great and you'll be able to take your time and play other tube amps and find your sound.
Thank you very much! Very informative. Would a 1 or 2x12 do?
An Orange 2x12 will sound great with just about any Orange amp and most amps in general. The sweet spot between a 1x12 and 4x12. Definitely worth the initial investment rather going through lower-quality cabs that will eventually cost more in the long run.
Once you've got a great cab then you've already set yourself on an upgrade path where you can just match it with a quality head. Even if you get a Micro Dark initially and upgrade to a more expensive amp, you can keep the Micro Dark kicking around for the aforementioned reasons as stated by Empty Pockets. It's still a nice amp in its own right.
If I had to start my rig from scratch again I'd probably be doing exactly the same thing, though I'd be going for a Dual Terror as my upgrade amp instead as I prefer its voicing.
I love my Micro Dark, but even with a good 4x12 you'd need to mic it for gigs... But then any decent band would mic the amps anyway even if they are barely in the Front of house mix.
Honestly, if you Intend to gig, I would say the regular Dark a Terror is the better choice, but you can send a line out from the Micro Dark's headphone jack to a PA... Or if you've got a more powerful amp already but want the micro dark's tone, connect it's effect send to the effect return of the other amp (if the amp relieving the signal from the micro dark is a tube power amp, even better).
That's interesting about the loudness... Would it do for bar gigs and concert halls?
Oh yeah! After playing mine through my 4x12, I realized that it can be stupid loud. You're not gonna do it without mic'ing the speaker for FOH, but it'll be loud enough onstage.
I can get mi Micro Dark to sound close to my Tiny Terror by lowering the gain and the volume on the guitar. You get an effects loop on the micro dark
I'm haven't tried the Katana, but with past experiences with solid stage amps in general, I'd say you want the 50 watt version at a very minimum for gigging.
A solid state amp compared to tube, you typically want to double the wattage. The reason is the power section doesn't compress and get those ear pleasing harmonics that a hard driven tube amp will. It tends to crackle and get nasty if solid state amps are pushed too hard so you want that extra headroom in the power section.
The Katana is a good amp but i prefer the Orange all day. That one 12AX7 makes a lot of difference, plus it's simpler to use.
Somewhat. It has more models, but the individual sounds won't differ much if at all.Would a Line 6 Flextone III be an upgrade from my Spider IV?
