mid-size amp for metal

my sister wants to start playing guitar, and my dad said if i gave her my practice amp hell get me a mid sized amp for xmas. which is cool. im lookin at like $300 limit pretty much, and i play mostly metal. ill be keeping this at school with me (the XXX is home), so a 1x12 would probably do the trick, but i could probably fit bigger if i had to. what do you guys reccomend? i never really pay attention to that range, i just look at the expensive ones

Re: mid-size amp for metal

A Mesa V-twin through about any SS amp sounds damned nice. Almost like a Mark.

Re: mid-size amp for metal

The Roland Cube 30 has some nice high gain tones. Also, the Line6 Spider II is in your price range.

Round 225-250 on the bay.

Re: mid-size amp for metal

the Line 6 Spider II, i recently played a show w/ a guy who had the 2x12 of it and it has some really killer distortion, A LOT better then i thought, i think the 1x12 version is only 200 bucks new. i think if i had a $300 limit i would go with that and i play similar things to you.

Re: mid-size amp for metal

ya, those Line 6 spider II amps are supposed to be pretty damn good for metal. And they are way versatile (they are Line 6, after all). And they are definatly in your price range. You should check one out and/or visit their website and listen to the clips and watch the movies they have for it.

Re: mid-size amp for metal

Whenever I'm playing at low volumes, nothing does the cheap Metal job for me like a Crate, preferably the 2x12 blue MX series. Lots of gain and it stays uber tight at low volumes. My practice amp.
