midi controller recommendations (Pro Tools)?

Re: midi controller recommendations (Pro Tools)?

Back to my original question then:

I don't know how you keep track of what's routed to what.

It's easier if you just think of them as plugging in different instruments. If your controllers are dedicated for each purpose, then it's no different than having all your instruments plugged in and ready to go; a couple synths, a couple guitars, a bass guitar, an electric drum kit and a recorder with play/record buttons.

Re: midi controller recommendations (Pro Tools)?

That's makes sense, as long as the post-production process is kept relatively simple.

Damn...the Arturia....400 bucks for a MIDI controller is too much. I've used Behringer UMX61 since 2007, previously with Cubase and now with Podium. Pretty good ;) Never acted up on me. They have 49-key version, UMX49 I believe.

If you're after a piano-feel keys, M-Audio has one.

I just want to share this very cool realistic drum kit I just found out 2 weeks ago. If you are not a drummer, composing drum fills can be a pain in the ass. This plugin provides you with pattern and fills presets...with drag-and-drop feature, drum tracks in an instant! It's totally free, no registration, no trial period. Check out the MT Power Drum kit:

Sooo...

Needed a small MIDI controller for rehearsals (something I can carry easily on the subway with a guitar /pedal board).

Finding one that allows micro USB for iPad connection as well as external power is tough these days!

Enter: Aturia for the win, again! Picked up the KeyStep, my fourth Aturia hardware controller: 32 keys with velocity and after touch, on board polyphonic sequencer, arpeggiator, MIDI I/O, micro USB, external power, Gate/CV, and multiple sync options - - all for under $150!

Not a fan of the small ish key size, but for a portable, powerful control set, it's hard to beat!

I decided to go with the Novation Impulse 25. I also got EZDrummer2, for which I had a 15% off coupon

I'm glad I got full-sized keys. I would've loved to go 49 keys, but there is no way I can accommodate something that big in my current setup.

Now I'm in the rabbit hole figuring all this out. Was able to record some tracks just to learn, but there are still configuration issues on the controller itself I haven't quite figured out.

Thanks to all who weighed in on this.

I've been doing MIDI drumtracks for ages and this one transformed the procedure from hours to minutes:

You 'tell' the drummer what to play, choose the closest groove in a sec, add variations, maybe play a little with strong structures - job done.

Wow. I bought this last week along with two expansion packs. Thanks so much for suggesting. You've saved me sheetloads of time.
