I've been experimenting a lot with mid settings. My bass and treble usually stay at the same level, and I use the mids to add or substract warmth, especially when going from clean to OD. I noticed that with the mids all the way UP, you get a HEAVY sound. Maybe mids drive an amp harder, maybe it's just the fact of having more frequencies boosted, but it kills.
Would it most often be too much? I never played with the midscoop but I'm getting drawn towards the... er... 1/midscoop thing. I assume it'd cut well through a mix, but in a recording situations, wouldn't it depend a lot on the pickup? Some may mush up the low mids or make the high mids too aggressive...
