Mids ALL THE WAY

I've been experimenting a lot with mid settings. My bass and treble usually stay at the same level, and I use the mids to add or substract warmth, especially when going from clean to OD. I noticed that with the mids all the way UP, you get a HEAVY sound. Maybe mids drive an amp harder, maybe it's just the fact of having more frequencies boosted, but it kills.

Would it most often be too much? I never played with the midscoop but I'm getting drawn towards the... er... 1/midscoop thing. I assume it'd cut well through a mix, but in a recording situations, wouldn't it depend a lot on the pickup? Some may mush up the low mids or make the high mids too aggressive...

Re: Mids ALL THE WAY

kerry king has a totally upside down smiley for his EQ - cut treble, cut bass, all mids. leave the bassist and drummer to cover the rest of it ;)

Re: Mids ALL THE WAY

I was told by the fine folks at this forum that EQ range of the guitar is the mids. That's the guitars sonic space and that's what you maximize on. I find myself doing a more treble/mid configuration and then adding bass on top of that when I need it. So, yeah, I agree with you: mids are great!

Re: Mids ALL THE WAY

Yeah
mids define the articulation of the sound, and gives morecrunchy.
without it, it gets muddy
Weperceive a lot of highs...
but we have not too much bassperception.. and the mids must be boosted a little.

Re: Mids ALL THE WAY

also... thats why i´m asking for a custom pup.
Because i knwo that the settings and tonal qualitiesi´mlookingfor, aren´t avaliable in the models i previously played.
don´tknow about the bkp
BUT .. their eqs.. don´tlook like
something i have in mind.
i may like the warpig or the nailbomb.. but i need ot test it,to decide if i´will want a customone or not...
i can´torder a customone without playing any bkpsand without feeltheir unholy Vibe.
but, i´ll say it again
i want lots of crunchy mids, not a big ammount of bass, but standard bass with LOTS of Tightness. and Not shrill, harsh, fuzzy, buzzy highs.. just beautiful highs.. airy/beautiful highs. like the sound of a lazer ray CUTTING THE SKY "TCHIUMMMMM"
Q:P
and Moderate/high output, something in the 18 k range.

Re: Mids ALL THE WAY

And.. AH, my slogan
Don´t Scoop My mids.Don´t Boost my Bass(i like it standard and tight). And Don´t Saturate My Highs(i Like´em Beautiful as a bold/airy brazilian bubblebut ass). and please... UNLEASH MY BEAST BY TURNING MY GAIN KNOB INTO FULLDISTORTION
ahhahahahahahahah

Re: Mids ALL THE WAY

why all mids and scooped treble and bass though? or so Imp says...

i keep my mids right below the 12 o clock area, my treble at about 2 o clock or so, and my bass around 12 or 1 o clock... are you guys saying this is bad?

Re: Mids ALL THE WAY

for amps with mid controls and a dirty tone i run the mids all the way up, at least on my marshalls and fenders. some of my amps dont even have mid controls (ex. dlx reverb ) in that case i run the bass as low as i need to keep the bottom not flubby and the highs a little higher but still not too high as to keep a good balance between the highs and mids

Re: Mids ALL THE WAY

Tons of mids will help you cut through a band, but it sounds like ass if you're playing by yourself. Even Kerry King's guitar tone sounds weird without Slayer (on the Guitar World cd-roms).

Re: Mids ALL THE WAY

Let's face it... Kerry King's tone and playing isn't that great period. The guys a slop-fest!

That said, I dig a bit of scoop in my mids. Tightens everything up!

With the right amp (like a traynor), you can get a great stoner rock sound if you have medium to heavy distortion and crank the mids, roll back the treble all the way, then slowly raise the bass end until you get a nice roar. It depends on the amp though.

For cleans, I like a brighter sound, which means less mids.

The thing is, what's even more important to me than having my mids, is NOT having too much bass. I think most people scoop their mids to get rid of mud, but in my mind mud comes from too much bass end. Those frequencies aren't natural to the guitar, and you end up competing with the bass guitar and drums.

Another interesting trick which gets a good Pantera sound involves using two EQs and a distortion pedal.

Guitar ---> Eq1 --> distortion ---> EQ2 ----> amp

At EQ1, crank the mids from around 300 hz to 1khz. Cut out everything else. At EQ2, radically scoop the mids and all frequencies about 7khz.

why are you shaking your finger like that?

its true, King does suck, i dont think he plays one solo in the proper key:dance:

Proper key? Don't you know what it means for music to be polytonal?

Re: Mids ALL THE WAY

I love a good mid-heavy tone! Makes it so much crunchier!

What always bothered me is why the Marshall DSL/TSL's have that mid scoop switch? Granted, I haven't played one, but if I was going to buy a Marshall, it would be to get a raunchy mid crunch, not scoop it out!

no, im not there yet, but i do know that his solos are quite ****ty.

Polytonality means that you have multiple voices operating in different keys and modes. Igor Stravinsky is a good example of a classical composer who used it.
