Might try Emgs...

Re: Might try Emgs...

Don't get a Peavey Bandit and expect these to work wonders.

Hey now! I have a bandit :laugh2: Y'know sunlight used those amps for a long time with nothin but a boss hm-2 in front of em :smack: I will admit though, I yearn for a nice tube amp.

I have emgs in my cheapo sg, and I can say this- they cut wonderfully, and have a good sound but ARE one dimensional. You get the emg sound and nothing more. You don't like it? Tough cookie. I prefer the 85 to the 81 for the most part but the 81 sounds pretty good for thinner tones. You can get enough variety from the two to suit quite a few needs but I get tired of the characteristic "emg sound" every now and again. can't wait to get those duncans installed in my other guitar. Should make for a nice change.

Re: Might try Emgs...

Um, I like EMGs, but the 81 is a terrible bridge pickup IMO. It's very trebly and scooped-sounding and no, not good for cleans. If you're getting the 81/85 set, use the 85 in the bridge like mentioned before. It's a lot fatter with huge output. If that's what you want, you can't go wrong.

Re: Might try Emgs...

There are quite a few misconceptions about active pickups and EMGs in general. I know some good local blues and jazz guys who swear by EMGs for their utter clarity and transparecy. I had a korean guitar that sounded terrible to my ears. All of the terrible qualities I hear unplugged were so much more apparent with EMGs than another other pickup. Plus, you should be able to cover any style when choosing from 60, 60A, 89, 85, or 81.

the 81 is all mids so it pushes the amp harder

THE 81 IS NOT SCOOPED SOUNDING....it has plenty of mids...and next to no bass.

Out of all of them, the 85 is probably the most scooped, and even it has plenty of mids.
