mini HB in neck of a tele? Sm-1/Sm-3 vs. GFS mini HB?

Hi there,

I have a custom Telecaster with a Paulowinia body. This thing is bright, bright, bright and a naturally loud guitar.

I currently have a GFS mini HB in the neck: http://www.guitarfetish.com/Fat-Min...Chrome-Case-Our-Best-Neck-Position_p_492.html

I like it because I can get warmer than usual sounds for a Tele, but it still has some brightness. I've been a little unsatisfied with it though because the high end doesn't have a very clear character to it and this makes it sound harsh when it's overdriven.

I was pleased to see that Duncan makes mini HBs. However, they're described as more single coil sounding. Can anybody that owns one comment on this?

I use the sm3 in my tele.

People use the single coil analogy maybe because they're reaching for words to describe it.
First, it's definitely a humbucker. That openness that a single coil has is kinda muted. On the other hand, it's definitely not as muffled sounding as a paf style.
It's somewhere in between. Definitely a bucker but not as dull sounding.
The bass holds together extremely well but is what I call bottomless. Never woofy, but deeeeeep and strong.
With the gain up on a Marshall type amp, it can give you a good approximation of a traditional humbucker, though.
I find it very versatile.
