Mini-Review: Zhang Special Rewind

First, I want to give a big thank you to fellow forum bro, Zhangliqun, for rewinding my stock Fender pickups. He's a pleasure to deal with and really easy to talk to. He's got a good ear too. Now, on to the mini-review.

This is a mini-review simply because I've not been able to play my Strat through my Marshall yet and probably won't for at least another week or so. All I have at home is my Crate GX-15 and although it is a great little amp, single-coils just don't sound their best through it. They sound good, just not their best. But I was able to really hear the tone of my newly rewound "Zhang Specials" as I call them.

The tone I was after with them was one of SRV + Hendrix. The fat warmth of SRV with the bite of Hendrix. Well, I got it and then some. The sparkle is there too, just smoother. No ice pick.

Both pickups measured a measley 2.8k DC resistance when I sent them off to him. They now measure 7.21k for the neck and 7.35k for the middle (RWRP). What a perfect match for the Little '59 in the bridge. The middle pickup itself is just a joy. I love the tone. The neck has this sweetness to it when picking lightly but hit it hard and it'll respond in spades.

This is the first time I've had pickups rewound but I can tell ya this, Zhang (Dave) does a good job. No, make that GREAT. Not only did he get the tone I was wanting right, he even asked every question imaginable to make sure he knew what to do to get it right. :fing2: :fing2:

Oh, and as a bonus, he even vintage staggered them for me since he discovered that the mags are in plastic like in a bucker bobbin. So, it was easy to do the stagger without hurting the wire.

Anybody looking for a rewind and can't afford to use our hosts wonderful facilities (like me), consider Dave's services.

Thanks again, brotha. :fing2: :D

Sorry to completely hijack the thread, but didn't you used to have the avatar of a single angled 'bucker guitar (the Kramer Beretta)? I ask because I've developed a bad habit of identifying forum members by their avatar... which really screws things up when they change 'em :laugh2: :chairfall

:laugh2: Yes, I did. The NYC Baretta, my baby. When I get a chance to get a really good pic of my Strat, that'll be the next after I get bored with the smiley. ;)

Re: Mini-Review: Zhang Special Rewind

I have a Duncan Designed humbucker I'm going to be sending in to him soon. I'm really lookin forward to it, especially now!

Re: Mini-Review: Zhang Special Rewind

That's awesome. Zang is a real pro when it comes to tone. I bet those pups sound amazing - especially once you get to play 'em through the Marshall.

Re: Mini-Review: Zhang Special Rewind

Thanks for the kind words, Erik. The only correction that I would make is that I measured the pickups when they came in and they were pretty much right at 6.0k stock. If there was only 2.8k worth of wire on there, I might have been able to see the bobbin under it if I held it up to the light!!

EDIT: The free rewind (plus shipping, gimme $5) offer is good through February 10. After that, I'm gonna be asking for money, though it will still be pretty cheap.

I've ordered a bunch of parts so I can also make you whatever you want from scratch. I have some #42 PE wire arriving later this week...

No problem, Dave. You got 6.0k on your meter from them? Man, I need a new DMM. It read 2.8k for both and that was with them not wired in circuit. Didn't matter if I measured it from the ends of the leads or at the solder points on the plate. Weird. Either way, they're a hell of a lot better now. Thank you.

Re: Mini-Review: Zhang Special Rewind

sounds like a cool set of pups. what wire did ya use dave? doing free rewinds is nice of ya :)

do you have a good supplier for pup parts? specifically bucker parts? not magnets but bobbins and such

Re: Mini-Review: Zhang Special Rewind

I used #42 poly wire on both his pickups, though as I said, I've got some #42 PE on the way.

For the humbuckers I have various suppliers -- Stewmac for zebra bobbins sets, long-leg baseplates, shims/spacers, slugs, screws, etc. Guitar Jones has double cream bobbin sets and I have some of those coming in later in the week. (GJones also has wider bridge/trem spaced bobbins and baseplates with short legs for the Strat-inclined.) I get what will work for me from Stewmac because they are cheaper than Guitar Jones, but go to GJ for stuff (like the double creams and wider spaced bobbins and baseplates) that Stewmac doesn't have.

Single coil flatwork from Stewmac and I got some eyelets for tapped singles from musikit.com.

I have been using Stewmac #42 and #43 poly up to now but MSW Wire is sending me a big 6-lb. spool of of the #42 PE.

I get all my magnets from Allstar (the Stewmac rod magnets I bought were godawful....)
