Mini tube amps... which one??

Hello everybody.

Due to space restrictions in my current apartment and to avoid the hassle of carrying gear up and downstairs when rehearsing and gigging, I've decided to scale down my gear. I'll save the full-scale gear for bigger shows when required.

In that regard, I'm looking for a small high-gain tube amp (20-30W) to play in the rehearsal space with a loud drummer and smaller gigs (pubs and places like that). Our current style something of a cross between old Dissection and old Morbid Angel with a good measure of Hypocrisy. So a high gain amp with a nice clean channel and effects loop is the target; also in the neighborhood of the $400 to $500 mark maximum (new or used, it doesn't matter).

I have some options in mind, but since I don't have access to any of them locally unless I order one online, I must resort to youtube clips and reviews. That's why I'd like to have your opinions about these amps (also if you can offer me some new options I'll gladly receive them):

a) Carvin V3M - Nice, portable and full of features; plus, made in the US.
b) Peavey 6505 Mini - This amp needs no introduction. I wonder if this one is as nice as it's bigger brother.
c) Randall RD-20 - I've seen loads of great comments about this modern series of Randall amps.
d) Blackstar HT-20 - Also a nice alternative.

I've tried some Traynors that definitely fall within your budget. they are quite cheap used. I don't know the model numbers, but there's a wine red one that has two channels, which a pretty plentiful used and have two really good channels. There's also a boxy one that has a USA/British switch that does a pretty cool imitation of both fender/marshall tones.

I think the Randall RD20 is the best choice for what you listed as type and requirements of a decent clean channel. If you didn't care about cleans, I would say the 6505 mini would fit good too, but the Randall sounds every bit as mean as the 6505 and has fantastic clean channel. The Blackstar would probably require a dirtbox in front for a little push and don't know about the Carvin, but all the demos I listened to of the Carvin didn't quite match the Randall for brutal modern metal.

I've played the full size 6505 and the Blackstar only. Just checked out a lot of clips for the Randall while pre-shopping for a mini head.
6505 mini has a few more features for getting to bedroom volume levels and wicked power amp breakup.

Exactly my thoughts; for Metal, probably the best bet will be the Randall (followed closely by the 6505 Mini).

Re: Mini tube amps... which one??

There is a new EVH lunchbox coming soon.

Yes I saw that a few moments ago. That might be a nice option but it falls a bit off my budget; I'm not planning to spend too much in this amp since it's gonna be the "small setup" amp.

Plus, I managed to convince the wife that "I needed another piece of gear" :naughty:; obviously the question de-rigueur was "how much will it cost this time??".

Re: Mini tube amps... which one??

While not a "Marshall" guy, I like the DSL15.

I'm not a "Marshall" guy either; my current amp is a Rivera K-Tre. I've never liked Marshalls for heavy stuff.

Incidentally these bands (Morbid Angel, Dissection and Hypocrisy) use or have used Marshalls for their sounds... :33:

Re: Mini tube amps... which one??

Saw on ebay a few Randall RD20's at lower prices. $399 and even down to $350 from one seller. These are for brand new.

I tried the Marshall dsl15 at GC, but skipped it as it didn't have an fx loop. I need the fx loop to run my other preamps when I want and prefer my delay, eq, and effect part of my decimator 2 G-string after the preamp. Decimator 2 g-string has the guitar in, guitar out, dec in, dec out jacks and meant to be first pedal in chain before preamp, and last pedal after preamp but before delay at the same time so it tracks your guitar signal right at guitar and applies gate effect after all the gain but before delay so tails aren't cutoff. Quite an ingenious gate for getting those sustained notes to not get clipped ever, but still provide ultra silence in between notes. Needs fx loop to be fully utilized or separate preamp and power amp so you can insert it between the two. Other than that, the little Marshall had some decent sound, but just didn't seem to offer a whole lot over some other offerings available now.

Yeah, the effects loop is a must, at least for me.

It all points to the Randall, it seems.

Re: Mini tube amps... which one??

I like the Carvin. Versatile, compact amp. I didn't spend much time with it but I agree, probably not the best choice for modern metal.

Re: Mini tube amps... which one??

Randall RD
Orange (one of the terror series which are awesome but pricey)
Blackstar HT (or even HT metal)
hughes & kettner

Thank you all for you comments; I finally decided and bought a Mini Rectifier. It just arrived to the country and I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow or so; this weekend I hope to put it though it's paces, so I can give a review about it. I'm thrilled, tp say the least!!!
