Minihumbucker in a Strat... :)

Re: Minihumbucker in a Strat... :)

I used a 59n in my old Strat for years. After reading here about it being boomy,
I tried out a couple of others. First the Jazz...not enough ummmph, after being used to the 59, the Jazz just didn't cut it. Next was a PGn....wonderful! The PGn has a very nice vibe to it in the neck of a Strat, kinda reminiscent of a good single coil but hotter.
Made me want to play the blues all night.

In the end and after I switched from a C5 to a Custom in the bridge. The 59 returned and from the minute I finished putting it in, I knew it was perfect for me.

The 59n can make a Strat sound more like a fat archtop, which I dig. Is it boomy?
Well...yes, under a lot of gain. I tend to use the neck pickups either clean or slightly dirty. The bridge and middle get the hi gain duties.

You might want to consider the PGn for a cleaner sound but hang on to the 59 just in case!

Shows everyone's ears are different. I don't hear the jazz being any less output at all, it almost comes across as hotter due to the increased high end sizzle.

I don't play with much gain and find the '59 boomy under any condition, but that is it's charm as a clean jazz pickup.

The PGn struck me as possibly the most boring pickup ever, completely lacking in personality. I couldn't find anything to like about it, nor anything to really hate about it other than nothing to like about it. It lasted 10 minutes.

That said I never put humbuckers in the necks of strats, only HH LP types. I have a few super strats with Hum necks, but I try to keep them bright/tight as I can pickup wise.
