I am a big fan of Johnny Winter, especially his playing and tone on Johnny Winter And ... Live. But I never got the heart to devote/buy a mini hb equipped guitar. I know I suck!!!

One question to you guys! Would converting a strat with firebird minihb's get me close? I know the reverse firebirds have a neck through body with walnut winds. What if I were to convert a strat? Ash or Alder?

I tried a les paul deluxe that had them one time, really nice clean with more mids than a single coil, a little more bass ... not a open sounding as a single coil in fact I thought a standard full sized humbucker was a bit more open sounding than the mini hum. More punch though overdriven, and it did warm up a bit more than singles ... but I never really got used to it, it didn't really do it for me.It seemed to me like the opposite of what most people consider on a soapbar bright tight low end, with an open mid and a high end that gets warmer and fatter as it gets higher ... to me minihums kinda tried to do that but they started didn't capture those harmonics as well, and the mids stayed a bit more closed or focused, and the bass wasn't as snappy.
To me they were warm and bright, but they just didn't seem *alive* ... I can't
describe it any better, they didn't sound bad, but to me they kinda missed something.

Just got back from a 3-days session in Nashville. Pitching 6 tunes to Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. The Firebird Strat sounding amazing. Can't say enough good stuff about those Antiquity Firebirds. Bright but very solid. Amazing cut and clarity. Did great with a doubled lead phrase in one of the tunes, and gave some wonderful rythm tones as well. Pricey but very unique.

I have a pair of Seynoreized mini's in a LP Deluxe copy. They give me the sound of The Who's "Don't Get Fooled Again". More of a snarel than a growl.

yeah, I don't think mini's are the best for heavy distortion at all. medium to low gain, and they seem to like the treble bumped up quite a bit. That's what worked for me.

i built a chambered swamp ash body tele (wenge top) for a guy with 2 seymourized minibuckers and i didnt want to give it to him. a really nice variety of tones

Is the seymourized version the sm3? I've been thinking about getting a neck pickup.

Yes, the SM-3 is the Seymourized mini-HB. I put an SM-3n in the neck slot of an ash American Series Telecaster, and it sounds great alone and in combination with the Nocaster in the bridge slot. The first SM-3n I received was microphonic, but SD sent a replacement that sounds just as good minus the squeal injection feature. It is a very full sounding neck pickup with a bit of the compressed HB thing going on, but it also has that hollow SC tone and enough high end to squeeze out some nice pinch harmonics. I think it's a great choice for a Tele, and the standard 4-conductor wiring makes it Fender-friendly.
