Well I just got a nice tax refund, so I'll be purchasing some new gear to fiddle with:

Guitars will be the following:
Ibanez ART100
Ibanez ART200FM

Going into -> Marshall JCM2000 and Marshall AFD100

I'd like to designate one axe as vintage, and one as modern.

Bridge pickups will be DiMarzios Super Distortion and Tone Zone.
Neck pickups Duncans '59 and Alnico II Pro

Problem is I can't figure which ones to mix. Please vote and help me decide or comment.

Re: Mix 'n' match

Well Super D and Tone Zone are both pretty modern pickups, not very vintage.

I personally would pick something different for the bridge for the vintage tones. Both are awesome heavy pickups. And I would change the '59 for something like Pearly Gates. I'm not a biggest fan of the '59 but if it works for you, go for it.

For the vintage I voted for the ToneZone/Alnico2Pro which should make a beast combo, I love both pups very much. For modern Super-D/'59 which will rock hard also. My votes was partially based on the output of the pickups, lower for vintage and higher for modern but those combos would make more sense anyway.

The Super Distortion was introduced in 1972. Ace Frehley used it in Kiss. Eddie Van Halen used a copy on VH1. Not necessarily low output or "PAF" like, but most certainly vintage.

@metalmachine - I have no desire to emulate John Petrucci. My favorite lead and rhythm tones among others are from Dexter Holland and Slash.

Basically I would just like an opinion on what goes better with the ceramic, a '59 or APII. I'll stick the other with the Tone Zone.

I couldn't get the poll to work the way I wanted.

+1

really just wanted some insight. I too think output wise, those combos make sense.

Yes I know Super-D was introduced way back but that doesn't make it vintage.
Dimarzio introduced the 36th Pafs a couple of years ago. That doesn't mean they are modern pickups. Super-D was very modern pickup then.

And what I meant by saying modern merely meant that they are high output.

Re: Mix 'n' match

Well I picked up the first of the Ibanez guitars yesterday.
It looks like the DMZ Super Distortion/SD 59 won by majority, so it will be going into Ibanez #1.

I've also reflected on what qualifies as a vintage tone, and do agree a Tone Zone may be too high output.

When the time comes, I believe a DMZ Fred/SD Alnico Pro II would be more appropriate.
