Mixing on a PC?

Re: Mixing on a PC?

The chipset argument goes on both sides, but the real reason a lot of Windows users have a problem with FireWire is because Windows treats it as a network connection. You'll actually get pops and crackles in your recorded audio if you record at the same time you have a wireless card turned on.

If you're anything more then half-way serious about recording you'd have all the non-essential stuff like wireless cards & networking disabled.

Crackles can come from lots of things, buffer size... bad power... incorrect clocking... too many things one on internal buss...

The Presonus stuff is fine for what it is.

Firewire or USB... likewise makes no difference. Pick it based on what the other computing needs are.

At that price point it really makes no difference which you use. Worry about where the microphone is placed and getting a great performance. That'll make a bigger difference then anything else...

Software is a bigger hurdle.

The Swamp record was three years in the making... We had stuff on every conceivable format; 2" 24-track, Toolz, Digital Performer, Sonar, Nuendo, both mac & PC and with the exception of Toolz everything talked to everything else without a hitch.

The guitarist though, he was on Sonar and after a stint of home overdubs & exporting he switched to Cubase because dealing with Sonar was a huge time suck. It pools all your audio files together and gives them random names, so importing/exporting is WAY harder then it needs to be. We actually lost takes.

Not to mention that it's a clunky interface at best...

Re: Mixing on a PC?

I use Tracktion. It is just me and my softsynths (triggered by guitar), and sometimes vocals..and its really fast and glitch-free, and I have tested it up to 80 tracks (not all the way through the song!) without dropouts.
