MJ Jazz Bridge Installed...

In Mahogany American Strat... But no pics*! And along with an ROHS SH2n, but we all know what that sounds like, and very few people have even seen an SH2b before, let alone a ground shield model from the eighties, so...

Speaking of 'how an SH2n sounds,' I'll take a stab: low-ish output, low on bass, relatively low on mids, very open, non-rounded, 'flat' tone containing a bunch of harmonic content. Well, all of the above applies for the Jazz bridge. Comparing it to what was there before (Screamin Demon,) they're both scooped pickups, but the Jazz bridge has more mid honk. They're both un-compressed, but the Jazz moreso. They're both bright, but while the Demon actually has a lot of tight bass, the Jazz has a smaller amount of very loose bass (that can sound pretty big with a bit of drive.)

The biggest diff. is probably the much softer attack and more harmonic high end vs. the Screamin Demon (which is a very quick, very single coil-like pickup, probably why I like it so much, probably why it's going back in VERY soon, unless I get really used to the Jazz neck.) I've been trying to determine orchestral analogues for some pickups; the JB "sings,', the Screamin' Demon is a sax, the 59 is somewhat trumpet-like, so I guess the Jazz bridge is... A trombone.

Mine only tests at 7.2 DC, compared to 7.0 for the neck pickup (and so to my ears provides a much better tonal balance when switching pickups than say, the SH2 and SH4 combo.) The combined tone is a bit bright for the jazzier things I usually like to do w/ combined pickups but at least I have a tone control in this one (with two 500ks.) In terms of output vs. the Screamin Demon, there's actually not a huge diff, but I'd have to gauge the Demon as having slightly higher output (although the Mv ratings say otherwise.)

At the end of the day, man, I REALLY like the Screamin Demon, although that's likely because I'm a big Fender single coil fan; the Jazz bridge is much more 'humbucker' and much less brash. I'll keep it in for maybe a month and see how I feel. It does have a bit more chime and clarity than the Demon, although the Demon has a bunch of that too so...

...

* So I usually have luck with cheap Chinese pickguards, but I finally got one where only two holes line up with any screws at all; the rest are close enough that I can tell they were trying for a Standard eleven hole pattern, yet far enough off that I can't even fudge elongating the hole etc. without making it look totally ghetto. Beside, it's a freaking humbucker in black with no Duncan silkscreen, I hope you have imagination enough to conjure the image of one in a Strat with a flopping-around pickguard regardless.

The Jazz bridge is one of the pickups I haven't tried yet. You just don't see them in the wild much, but this description has me wanting to try one. Thanks for the review!

Re: MJ Jazz Bridge Installed...

Wonder if it's the temp. or my multimeter, but is 7.2 is normal for a Jazz bridge of this era? Apparently they're 8.4 now; does anyone know if they changed spec. ?

The neck pickup also reads a bit low at 7.0 anyway vs. the current Duncan website... I'm not going to complain, they don't need more output, but kind if weird.

Re: MJ Jazz Bridge Installed...

Hi
Been having a problem with one of my Strats being very dull and although I love my 59/Custom, thought I would try a Jazz
Bridge in the lead bucker slot. I had it laying around so what the heck? It turned out much brighter than any of my previous pick ups. It really goes well with my TwangBangers.
I need the 59/Custom for stage. But I might use this for my thinner, maple neck 2-tone Clapton "Brownie" look alike.
It is bright enough to sound like a really loud Strat p'up but still has that single coil sparkle.
Thanks for idea,
Steve Buffington.

Re: MJ Jazz Bridge Installed...

Glad you enjoy the pickup :) I'm starting to find more favor with the Jazz bridge after a few days; it's somewhat less obnoxious/more subtle than the Screamin Demon that was in there before. However, if you want a brighter pickup, that's still the Screamin Demon overall; it has a lot more presence and bass, while the Jazz bridge has less bass but a softer presence across its range. If you want something single coil-like, the Demon gets VERY close to that tonality. Pick one up if you have the opportunity, you might be pleased :D

Re: MJ Jazz Bridge Installed...

Silence Kid,
Thanks. I would think the Screamin Demon would be harder to clean up as it is wound to be pretty hot. IIRC.
Mincer,
When you are out p'up hunting in wild tundra, do you use humbuckers so the other pick ups won't hear you coming with your high powered 60 cycle hum? That is cheating, btw. If you are p'up hunting you are only allowed 1 multimeter and one gauss measurer.

Re: MJ Jazz Bridge Installed...

i recently bought a JazzB pup without any knowledge about it. all i know is, it is a rare pup to find brand new. i do like a JazzN.
i had a lil screamin' demon before. but i guess it's not fair to compare a mini hb to it's full size hb brother.
thanks for this review. atleast i now have an idea on how my les paul would sound like.

They're really close in output; I'm still waffling on which one I think gives a better clean tone, the Demon always seemed to be louder, but not necessarily more gritty, if that makes sense. I think the Jazz pushes such a broad frequency spectrum that it comes across as a dirtier pickup once you push it, but they both clean up well by turning back the volume/picking etc.
