MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

Maybe you should contact Blackpoole? I thought that was cool, too. How cool would that be, especially on a well made guitar. Given they spray nitro for builders they must know what they're doing to keep the coats thin enough on an acoustic.

Finishing an acoustic requires some skill, right beanbdip?

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

Finishing any guitar requires a good bit of skill, but I'd say more so on an acoustic or set neck electric with tight corners that are visable like the neck/body joint.

As for finishing an acoustic, I prefer extremely light coats of lacquer, aged or tinted to perfection. I supposed I could relic it myself (like so many of my instruments), but I was just wondering why no one's filled the market. There's a new Alvarez Yairi with a distressed spruce top, and the Washburn 125th special has an aged body. I would just think that with all the relic'ing going on in the electric world, and how many folks play old beat up acoustics, there might be a market for it.

But I've been wrong before.

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

In my opinion, relicing only looks good on fender guitars and basses. Anything gibson-like just looks unkept. Unless you're Tony Iommi.

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

I came across this tonight from Blackpoole. Another unique relic, at least to me. This one looks like it has an ebony board & filtertrons. Man, I'm diggin' their stuff. Checkout the gold relic hardware too. Looks like an old trumpet I played in high school :approve: Has all that tarnish and dark wear going on.

Yeah i saw that. Very unique. I wonder if he has these painted and made for him and he just relics them, or whether he makes them from scratch. Would be interesting if we could get him in here for a wednesday luthier Q&A.

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

My buddy that visited them from the music store told me they start from scratch using raw bodies from Allparts. Same with the necks. He said there was at least 100 bodies drying in the paint room in all sorts of vintage colors when he was there with about the same amount on benches just raw, sanded, sealed, etc. Guess we could invite them? That would be interesting.

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

I've talked to Evan Skopp about inviting Andy (i think thats his name) to speak with us. We'll see what happens. Wish us luck..hehe

Stale -Is it a chat type of thing? Like IM in real time?

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

Umm well we start a thread and the people post questions and he answers them. Yes in real time.

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

I went to the Blackpoole ebay store to check on the Teles today and came across these Strats. WOW! Now I'm like my wife picking out wallpaper / give me too many choices and I have problems choosing :-)

Check these out.

The arm wear on the blue looks so sweaty and dank. Like they've been played and put in a case and never cleaned. The grime is what gets me.

Which way do I go? i have many teles and I'm not really a strat guy but that red one really has my attention.

The sonic blue looks more vintage in color and relic. I'd go for that. Very impressive in my opinion.

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

Yes, I like the blue but there's something about the dakota red with all of that grime embedded in the finish that catches my eye. Its like dank sweat or spilled bear that just worked its way into the red paint and made it darker & lighter in different places. Looks awesome in the picture with the back and neck together. Both look grungy.

I'm a fan. :cool2:

Hey 59' you need to get out beyond this thread and explore the forum a bit. You seem like a pretty chill person. Check it out.

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

Does anybody know if the relic tele they sell is routed for a neck humbucker? I have an Alnico pro II neck model that would go great with a jerry donahue bridge in one of those bad boys... Hopefully I can sell enough gear to afford one before they raise the prices...

Re: MJT v.s. Blackpoole: The Ultimate Showdown

Assuming they use unfinished allparts bodies. I would say not. You could request one or just have a buddy of yours route it out for you. It's so easy a caveman could do it.

"I KNEW I COULD DO IT!"

I will. I'm more of a guitar guy and not so experienced with pickups. I own SD Dynas in my Gretsch that Marisela built from the Duncan Custom Shop. AWESOME work. Kicks the pants out of the stock Dynas. I also have other pickups installed in various guitar from SD. Great stuff.

I'll check out other threads. I guess i just got caught up in this one. :friday:
