Moar questionz-RG neck nut swap tp top mount, OMGZ

I've got an RG neck that has the stress cracks in the usual spot around the rear mount nut holes. It's actually pretty bad. It has been fixed, but not real cleanly. I'm thinking I'll just drill the rear mount holes out and dowel them, then go back in with a top mount nut.

I'm not worried about looks, I'm going in with walnut rod, and I think it will be stronger than ever afterwards, but I am worried about how close all this is to the truss rod.

Has anyone done this before?

I've you've done a good repair with the glue I wouldn't worry too much about changing the nut. Just don't over-torque the screws that hold the nut in place, and don't drop the guitar. ;)

I've cracked the same neck twice over the years from dropping it. Pretty bad too, but even after 2 repairs with dowels to help strengthen the repair it's still holding up really well. The frets on the other hand, they are almost flat from too much play time!

as long as the walnut inserts aren't ludicrously huge or significantly larger than the holes you're plugging, I don't think it'll matter much about the location of the truss rod.

but yeah, pics would be helpful

I wouldn't drill the hole any bigger than it takes to get a uniform hole' and I certainly would not drill them the size of the screw head recess. Remember, the larger the hole the more longitudinal fiber you cut away, which will weaken the neck shaft / peg head transition area at the nut. I would try to clean up any old glue and then re glue it and re use the old nut. If it was very bad, after gluing it I would wrought a channel on each side of the T-rod though the break area and glue in a piece of vertical grain wood in each slot. Then re drill the mount holes for either the original nut or a top mount.

Well, I was planning to drill the whole thing out clear through the fretboard under the nut, thus filling the recess, pinning the joint for strength, and giving me new material for the nut mounting screws.

The original nut is long gone, and this thing was repaired by someone else and I'm not sure how well. It seems solid, but I'm a little nervous about really bending on it, it was pretty shredded from the looks of it.

Yes, I'm trying to salvage what is more or less junk, but it's straight and it's a lefty reverse. I'll get a few pics tonight.

If you can drill and dowel it parallel with the neck access and orient the grain of the dowels so that it is vertical, that would do it. Then use a top mount nut. Just try to keep as much of the original wood in tact as possible when plugging the old mount holes. You can use a dowel that is stepped (two different diameters. One smaller for the screw hole going through, then stepping up to a larger diameter for the screw head recess) to plug the old holes.
