I heard of a set of pickups that sound great they were called
" model 78"..i was thinking on get some for my jackson..the jackson is black and flourescent green zebra...can the pickup come in custom colors or do i have to paint them to match...

Re: model 78 pickups

Since the '78 is a custom shop model, you can get it in whatever color you want. :)

The bad news is that you're paying custom shop prices.

Ah ! you mean the one that's supposed to sound like Van Halen

Re: model 78 pickups

I have one also. It is a very good pickup, but as Alec said, not MY ideal pickup.

It has that old PAF with a little extra beef sound, nice full mids, ok bottom end and a little zing in the treble. It really, really does a great job in a super strat of nailing the tone of some old guy who used to play in a great rock band some years back.

However, there are other pickups that are standard production pickups that do just as good of a job. Quite honestly, if I were going to pay custom shop prices, and get custom color to boot, I'd call and talk to MJ, tell her exactly what you want your pickup to do, what kind of guitar, all that...and have her wind something SPECIFICALLY, CUSTOM, for you. She is a WIZARD when it comes to stuff like that.

If I'm spending $160 a pickup, which I'm not afraid to do, I'm getting EXACTLY what I want.

Re: model 78 pickups

I've got 2 78s (I'm not a big VH fan either :P) one in my PRS CU24 and the other in my R8.

The 78 is unlike any other pup I've ever really messed with. It's chewy. The mids are very complex and cut through the mix really well. The low end is rounded off compared to...say a 59 and the high end is pretty aggressive in a a Pearly Gates kind of way. I ordered my second one after I had used the first one for 3 weeks. The pup is very clear and articulate as well.

Neither of mine are wax potted, and the one in my R8 has the Seth Lover Butyrate bobbins and long legs.

Re: model 78 pickups

I love mine. Its a great hard rock sort of tone, and has a bit more aggression. Definitely chewy. It won't make you automatically sound like VH of course, but if thats what you want, I'm sure it will help.

Re: model 78 pickups

Ok, ut HOW do you order custom made pickups ?

By the way here in europe we have Bare Knuckles that also makes the "VH2".
For those who don't know, Bare Knucle have the reputation to be one of the best,
if not the best, pickups. They get awards every year from Guitar mags.
I'd like to try one but it's expensive.
