I'm thinking about gettng the new Digitech GSP1101 and putting it in front of my Mesa 20/20. Anyone have any experience with modelers in front of tube amps? Thanks!! Milk

Yes. I recorded an album with a ValveKing and a Toneport as the modeller. The VK was set on the clean channel cranked and the tones were from the Toneport. It works okay for the budget. I suggest you get an amp that has a clean sound you like.

Some people like it, because to their ears the modeller amp generates the tone and the tube power section gets the response. I have a friend that uses the Line 6 original Pod going into the Power Am in of his JCM 900 and he is completely happy with that tone and didn't like that tube pre-amp section in the tone scheme...

I admit that 128 tones may be cool... but I am happy with my 2 channel Triple Rec because I get the sparkling clean tone from the headroom and the distortion is controllable....

i've never been happy with modelers thru tube amps and guitar speakers..... modelers sound best to me thru a PA, a Keyboard Amp or a powered Monitor... something that has a full range speaker and power amp to reproduce the sound banks more clearly

it will probably sound better through a PA. Modeled tubes through actual tubes colors the sound too much. I use a GT-Pro.

I use a Tonelab through the effects loop of my Crate Vintage Club (50W 2X12). Sounds awesome. Have it set to '68 Plexi.

try one of the atomic amps.... and never look back. but if you are set on using the mesa you already have, you should look at other modelers as well. i have never liked digitech stuff.

I run my Vox ToneLab into my tube amp sometimes. It sounds cool. The different amp models and cab sims are simply changes in tone response. Running it into a bass amp is similar to going through a PA or keyboard amp.

If your amp has an efect loop, you can bypass the amp's built-in tone-shaping knobs and rely completely on the modeler's tone controls.

Through my limited experience,I would say it is a bit of a waste:
I tried to use the V-amp 2 in front of the Laney LC15R. I just lost all the dynamics from the tube.

I quickly gave up the idea:boggled:

In my opinion modelers such as the digitech you mentioned just can't get the right sound. No matter in front of a tube or a solid state or pa the thing just is missing something. Almost as if it sounds fake?

The best sounds I've ever heard modelers produce were recorded direct.

Some of the worst sounds I've ever heard were created by plugging a POD into the front end of a tube amp.

For live modeling tones, I tend to see good results from modelers plugged into good quality SS power amps, running through guitar cabs loaded with speakers of the player's choice, which of course varies from player to player.

I struggled with finding a Pod XT amplification solution for a long time. Tube guitar amps colored the modeler's tone way too much and usually made the patches sound mushy and boomy. Tube power amps were not bad, but usually sounded good only for certain patches. The best results I got were with keyboard amps and bass amps. I own a Roland Cube 60 keyboard amp from the 80's currently, and the Pod sounds really good through that.

That makes sense. I generally find that modelers sound best through amplification systems that color the tone of the modeler as little as possible. This means solid state power and neutral speakers, generally.

I have tube amps and a Tonelab. The Tonelab sounds best through a pair of full range monitors. Having said that, I've plugged it straight into a cab (bypassing the amp), and it sounded pretty darned good. Not loud enough for stage, but loud enough for recording.

Was it a powered speaker enclosure?

I use powered PA cabs for my GT-Pro...sounds great!

That's why they recommend you run the modeller through the effects loop
