What are your all's favorites and tell me you are using them in..

I would be looking at tone and reliability both..

Re: Modern Day 12AX7s

I like the new Tung Sols quite a bit myself and the new reissue Mullard (Not the GT Mullard) is a good tube as well and the other new X7 I like is the Svet...it's like the reissue Tung Sol but a bit more polite sounding to me.

Not sure why I even replied being on your ignore list and all but if you take a peek and see my reply I hope you find it helpful.

Re: Modern Day 12AX7s

I like a lot of the stuff coming from that one factory in Russia.

EHs are my favorite... I like mullards... tung sols are nice... those svetlana tubes are really nice as well.

You are off the list Christian....My daughter is very sick and instead of taking a breather from the forums...I'm being the *****y one....I'm ok now and I do appreciate the info...

Re: Modern Day 12AX7s

I like JJ's, Tungsols and even GT's (Sovteks) in small vingate amps. That's vintage lol. I just put a pair of JJ's in my little Fender Pro Jr. and next week I'll put Tungsols in my Blackstar HT-40. -Rod-

PS
I don't like TADS
though some people do
If I was Dr. Seuss
I'd do a poem about it
for you.

Re: Modern Day 12AX7s

12AT7s are WRONG for V1 and V2 AFAIC.... On paper they seem like the right gain b/w 12AX7s and 12AY7s, but the 12AT7s don't act properly in those spots, just phase inverter.

I always thought a 12AT7 was not so much a tonal tube as much as a tube used for the phase inverter or a functional tube compared to say the 12AX7/7025..

Yes, that's what I meant, let me edit that to clarify. People put them in V1 and V2 all the time :banghead:

Re: Modern Day 12AX7s

While it is not an 12AX7, I have used an EC83 (Or EC82 - I can not remember) made by RTS in V1 position and it sounded nice.

I have some old RCA 12AX7’s but frankly while those tubes were OEM in a Fender amp, they don’t have the same tone factor as some of the newer brands out there, like the new Mullards.

Re: Modern Day 12AX7s

i dunno....ive been using an aT7 as the first tube in my twin for about a week now. It sounds pretty good and makes the volume knob a lot more manageable.

Anyway back to ax7s:
tung sols if you want clarity
jjs for fat bottom and smooth top
EH are good all rounders with a nice mid chunk.

If memory is right?

12AX7 Gain factor of 100
12AT7 Gain Factor of 70

Re: Modern Day 12AX7s

i dunno about the numbers stratD. All i know is they have a bit less gain but can handle heaps more plate voltage.
