More amps, less pedals or vice versus?

Re: More amps, less pedals or vice versus?

Multiple high gain amps (incl. a number of "lunchboxes") Nothing fancy, but they all sound great/different to me. When I gig I just plug straight in (maybe some light delay/verb in the loop for solo's...but most often not..) I have some pedals too, but don't ever use them to gig with (or even that much at all )

Re: More amps, less pedals or vice versus?

I don't use pedals much at all, so I guess I'm a multiple amp player. I'm don't really play a bunch of amps either, though. Until recently I only owned a few amps at a time and the staple has for decades been my 87 50 watt Marshall Silver Jubilee. Now I have two Jubilees as I got a mini. I'm really glad I did because I love the mini. It is a Killer amp. In 5 watt mode the normal channel essentially provides a 5 watt (EL34) plexi and cranked up I can play it like one, riding the volume control on the guitar. Then If I need more gain I got the great sounding lead channel right there. I think the Jubilee was originally designed to be played this way-cranked up. If 5 watts isn't enough, I can kick it up to 20 watts. And if that's not enough I can pull out the old 50 watter.

I also like playing old school non master volume amps if I get the chance. I built a JTM45 clone and it is great for playing classic rock or blues, provided the venue is large enough to play a NMV amp the way it should be played.

I also acquired a DSL15, just because it runs 6v6s. The amp was useless until I modded it. Now it is a great amp to play a rock gig with. With a humbucker wound up it has a great high gain, but it cleans up beautifully by rolling the volume knob down, and you don't disappear in the mix. A very fun player amp, with no tap dancing required.

I also have modelling amps

Re: More amps, less pedals or vice versus?

I can use either approach. I prefer my Mesa Road King and CAE boost/OD, but I can get by with my hot rod deluxe along with a couple pedals. I'm not big on effects, so that doesn't make a big difference to me.

Re: More amps, less pedals or vice versus?

When I go direct, I go stereo, especially on those big festival PA systems...it sounds amazing. I bet 2 amps would work well, too, but I am not carrying 2 amps anywhere.. :)

Re: More amps, less pedals or vice versus?

i only run two amps if i am using my rotosphere, it sounds sooo damn good

Re: More amps, less pedals or vice versus?

I have become totally schizophrenic with regards to amps. In one of my bands I don't use an amp at all. I use a Yamaha DG Stomp preamp pedal direct to the PA. If i ever find a job and dig out of this unemployment hole, i'd like to upgrade to an atomic amplifire 12.
In my other band I use a blues jr with seven pedals including a Seymour Duncan Twin Tube classic and a ZenDrive for various flavors of gain and overdrive/distortion.
