More dumb speaker stuff...

alright, so I think I *kind of* get impedance, or at least know what I need... (8 ohms series/parallel), but exactly what does the power rating have to do with things...

Again I've got a 100 watt combo to fill with 4 12"s... I'm looking at Celestion G12-30s from an MG cabinet, and G12T 175s from uhh something...

Anyway, with 4 of the G12-30s I'll have 120 watts, and the G12T 175s are 300 watts altogether :o

So what's the advantage of using higher watt speakers?

more importantly... which way will give me the most headroom? If that's even an effect of the power rating :D I'm clueless :laugh2:

Re: More dumb speaker stuff...

I suppose you could use two of each, X-pattern style. You'd still be getting 120 watts. I am by no means an expert, but I'm thinking the 30s will break up sooner than the 75s, so the 75s would give better headroom. Could be good or bad depending. My understanding though, is that the G12T75s (or 175s or whatever) are a more "metal" speaker, with a more scooped EQ curve, where the 30s are a smoother driver with more mids. I have no experience with the 75s, but I am just getting acquainted with my V30/H30 cab (my first real cab), and I'm liking it so far. 100 watts can be ridiculously loud, I don't know why anyone would even need 300 unless they were on tour with Maiden or something. I stood in front of Warren DeMartini's two Soldano stacks for a few hours. They were both on "5" and my hearing was F-ed up for two days afterwards.

They don't put out 100w. You head supplies all the "power". The speaker can just HANDLE 300w. This is for headroom and sound characteristics. The 30's will break up easier as jammermatt said, therefore the 75's having more headroom. Depends what your going for though soundwise. What kind of music are you playing mostly? I have G12T-75's and I love them, they are a great all around speaker.
