Federal agents and local police today seized wood, guitars, computers and boxes of files from Gibson Guitar's Massman Road manufacturing facility.

Sources say the Nashville-based guitar manufacturer is charged with violating the Lacey Act, a key piece of environmental law, for importing endangered species of rosewood from Madagascar.

Rosewood is widely used in the construction of guitars and sells for $5,000 per cubic meter, more than double the price of mahogany. The island nation off Africa's east coast is a key producer of the hardwood, the export of which has links to international criminal activity.

Madagascar has struggled financially since a January coup and new President Andry Rajoelina issued an executive order in September legalizing the export of rosewood and ebony. The move was decried by environmental groups and political leaders worldwide, as hardwood forests are key to Madagascar's unique ecology and serve as a habitat for a dwindling lemur population.

Sources tell NashvillePost.com Gibson was involved in a scheme that shipped the wood from Madagascar to Germany and then to the United States.

Re: More Gibson news!

If this true then they have been a little naughty, although I also suspect other makers get their top quality wood from slightly dubious sources.

I found more information HERE

Re: More Gibson news!

Yeah i'd imagine Gibson isn't the only one with their hand in cookie jar.

Re: More Gibson news!

Oh man! If Gibson has to pay out a load of money for legal fees, they may have to pass the cost on to us, making their Guitars......OVERPRICED!!!
:jester:

Re: More Gibson news!

^ but wouldn't that just be so amazing?!

Is maple/alder in as high demand as Rosewood? I do actually wonder where Fender gets their wood.

No. Maple and alder are extremely abundant. It's not about demand so much as supply. There's more maple being used for guitars than rosewood but much less rosewood (particularly the sought after varieties) to go around.

Re: More Gibson news!

And you know what else????... Those cases with the white fur interior....

BABY SEALS!!!!!

Re: More Gibson news!

Save the trees! Let us make guitars out of materials like Switch Guitars do. :)

Re: More Gibson news!

REALLY???? I am paying out my ass in taxes and this is the result?

Well, I guess it's a good thing. We wouldn't want any of that dangerous wood to get in the hands of any school children or anything. :argh:

Re: More Gibson news!

I bet Leo would be pleased with his choice of woods now.

Leo Fender was an engineer first and foremost. The Telecaster and Stratocaster were designed to be easily mass produced and that included using the most common woods possible that would accomplish a decent guitar tone reasonably well.

Or maybe you would want those school children to have rosewood by the time they are 80......

Re: More Gibson news!

^^ Exactly why I said Leo was pleased with his choice. NOt paying an arm and a leg for Fretboard wood. FRETBOARD WOOD. How much influence does fretboard wood really have on tone? I'm serious, cause I doubt it's that Big a tone shaper.

This is (partially) why Gibson shouldn't have made that Bastard-Child Explorer/dimebag/monstrosity.
