More Gibson news!

Re: More Gibson news!

And you know what else????... Those cases with the white fur interior....

BABY SEALS!!!!!

:D

But on a moire serious note, this is all part of my master plan to usurp all major guitar companies so that I can buy them all out for the 2.57 I gots in me pocket. Zat vay Zerbe-Guitars can rule ze Vorld :laugh2:

^^ Exactly why I said Leo was pleased with his choice. NOt paying an arm and a leg for Fretboard wood. FRETBOARD WOOD. How much influence does fretboard wood really have on tone? I'm serious, cause I doubt it's that Big a tone shaper.

I´d say fretboard wood is about 10-20% of an electric guitar´s natural, unamplified tone, depending on actual design. Nowhere near as big a factor as Neck and body woods, but far from irrelevant and significantly greater than many thiings guitarists obsess over (ex. long tenon vs. Short tenon, Nitro vs poly, Flame vs plain maple, Nut material, Fret material, ...)

This is (partially) why Gibson shouldn't have made that Bastard-Child Explorer/dimebag/monstrosity.
I don´t see the connection between this and any specific model introduced by Gibson. Could you elaborate, please?

Doesn't Suhr use Madagascar Rosewood too?

Anyway, of all the foul things they've done this is of the more understandable kind.
Still bad, but in a "I don't approve but I kinda get it" kind of way...

Re: More Gibson news!

Glad to see a manufacturer punished for not implementing sustainable practises, not because it's Gibson, but because lemurs are cute and trees clean our air.

As for alternative choices for guitar materials I'd be interested to find out what a guitar made out of industrial hemp would sound/play like.

Re: More Gibson news!

Save the trees! Let us make guitars out of materials like Switch Guitars do. :)

Sadly, I dont think anyone carries the Switch guitars anymore.. They actually didnt play and sound bad.. The rainbow colored ones were ugly, but some werent bad. I wanted to get one to haul around with me as it gets so hot here in FLA and they say they were impervious to heat.. I just couldnt bring myself to plunk down the $$ for one.. In hindsight, I wish Id grabbed one for $150 they were blowing them out for

Prob see more guys imitating Hendrix and lighting the guitars on fire on stage... :eyecrazy:

Re: More Gibson news!

no way dude, industrial-grade? that's like 10% at best.

kinda stringy and fibrous isn't it? pretty soft right? i dunno where you'd get a plank of hemp wood big enough to cut / shape into a guitar...maybe use it for fretboards or something.

there's this guy tho:

Even has that twangy / out of tune tone you dig FP! :smokin:

Crap, another battle lost in the war on the environment.

When I hear about stuff like this, I ask: What has the environment done for us? We've been evolving for millions of years just because it pits us against each other and makes it insanely difficult to survive, where's the sympathy? We finally get to a point where we can get some revenge, and now environmentalists are telling us we're gonna destroy the planet. Good I say. **** Mother Nature.

ROFLMAO!!

Not that I totally agree, but that's funny!

I know Martin has been using Madagascar Rosewood too; so I wonder if they will be affected.

Interesting story.

Re: More Gibson news!

An FBI raid really for illegal wood importing? They will definitely have to go after a lot of companies in the biz large and small and what about companies importing guitars in to the US, will they be banned from bringing them in to the country?

Going to be tough I imagine. Shame on Gibson but they wouldn't do it if the demand wasn't there.

It wouldn´t play at all, hemp has a high tensile strength but effecteively zero compression resistance. put bluntly it´s like building a guitar out of rope.

One COULD impregnate the hemp with something like epoxy resin, but you´d need so much epoxy that you may as well leave the hemp out and just make guitars out of Bondo ;)

Re: More Gibson news!

REALLY???? I am paying out my ass in taxes and this is the result?

Well, I guess it's a good thing. We wouldn't want any of that dangerous wood to get in the hands of any school children or anything. :argh:

This is about destroying endangered forests, not any physical danger to consumer. We can chop all the world's trees down, but then what? Do we pave the world in concrete? Nice to have some intelligent resource management before things are gone for good.

Paramus NJ is already concrete except for a couple parks & the golf course. Drop "Garden State Plaza Paramus NJ" into google maps satellite view... Looks like Manhatten. All concrete. Shopping mall after shopping mall with 4 and 6 lane highways.

If that's "progress" then as humans I'm sure we don't really need any of it.

To bring it full circle, there's two Guitar Centers within 4 miles of each other, a Sam Ash between them and two more GC's within 10-15 miles of that. I hate driving up that way & try to avoid it as much as possible anymore.

Re: More Gibson news!

Madagascar Rosewood is illegal?

Many luthier supply houses carry it.

Importing and selling Madagascar RW and Ebony in general is not illegal.

Importing and selling Madagascar RW and Ebony from pirate logging camps destroying the forests at an alarming rate without permission or any form of government control is illegal, ecologically and environmentally irresponsible, and a true sign of humanity´s greed driven parasitic nature ;)
