Different species of tree + wholly different growing environment. BTW there is no such thing as "regular" rosewood

If you want to start a farm, you´re going to need a jungle with high temperatures and humidity year round..... Send me a letter when you find one that´s not already government controlled... Though Ironically that statement kind of throws the whole thing full circle...

Re: More Gibson news!

Importing and selling Madagascar RW and Ebony in general is not illegal.

Importing and selling Madagascar RW and Ebony from pirate logging camps destroying the forests at an alarming rate without permission or any form of government control is illegal, ecologically and environmentally irresponsible, and a true sign of humanity´s greed driven parasitic nature ;)

+1. Most of Madagascar's natural resources have been destroyed from the local's slash & burn land clearing; there's no excuse to destroy the little that's remaining by harvesting illegally.

Oops...I scanned the article and missed the part about "links to international criminal activity". :smack:

A drop in the ocean......

why doesnt the FBI go and bust a bunch of WallStreet firms and brokerages that have raped the country of its wealth and has destroyed the reputation of the system.

Even though I am not a fan of Gibson I find this quite hypocritical as most stuff is.

Re: More Gibson news!

If Starbucks can find a way to ethically harverst beans a conglomerate of guitar companies can figure out a way to ethically grow and harvest woods needed to build high end and quality guitars.

Re: More Gibson news!

Fender had this problem with the 2006 - Present FSR Mahogany STrats, however they didn't do anything illegal. The first few runs of this guitar (ones made till about may 2007 or so) are 95% of the time mahogany, whereas the more recent runs of this guitar are made from sapele, which is related to mahogany, but not really the proper wood. My stratocaster is dated Feb 12 2007, which leads me to believe it's the real deal. Just worth noting that Fender is still Fender, much like in the old days where they'd source wood from anywhere they could, they're still up to it today marketing sapele as mahogany. Difference is, Sapele isn't endangered.

Exactly. That was the point of my comment earlier about a wood farm. I read an article about the Sitka Spruce becoming super rare now and it impacting guitar manufacturing. While I know there are issues with climates, etc... I don't see why guitar manufacturers can figure out how to create sustainable stock of "prized" woods.

But then again, once they are sustainable, I guess they wouldn't be as prized anymore...

Re: More Gibson news!

How much more negativity can gibson take!?
Seriously, every month now it seems as though I'm reading about some massively failed attempt at something by this company. They can't possibly keep up this pace, and still keep pushing up the price of their instruments.
I like the gibsons that I own, but I feel that their time is nigh... say goodbye:(

Sitka spruce was selected decades ago because it was plentiful and affordable back then, not because it had superior tonal qualities. Now that it's getting rare, another spruce or conifer can be used. There's nothing magical about sitka.

Take a walk threw the coastal mountian ranges of British Columbia someday..
Then tell us how Rare , Sitka Spruce is.. ;)
When doing that with my friends from there..
Several asked me the same thing..
What are you looking at? (Trees biger than three or four of me could reach around)
The tree's, I would answer..
I had to wonder if thats what they looked like here, in Michigan, befor the lumberjacks took them all down..
A funny sidenote:
I had been asked to play at a friends moms funeral and wake.. 75 - 80 people.
At the wake, they handed me a large hollow body 1958 Gibson, that had been in the family sence 1962.
http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Archtop/Gibson-Custom/1934-L5/Features.aspx
And after I played it a bit, my friends brother asked me, What do you think of that guitar???
Well,, here I set 2,400 miles from my home.
You hand me a Guitar that was made 45 miles from my home, when I was three years old..
Plays nice, sounds even more so..
I think its a fine example of Michigan Maple and Spruce!
Saddly I did not know that saying that, would ruffel a few feathers.. :(
3/4ths there family is in the logging industry..
Its almost exactly like the auto industry is here in Michigan..
Everyones connected..
FWIW...
I seen some of the largest rainforest in the world out there..
http://www.britishcolumbia.com/regions/towns/?townID=4120
And have smelt forest fires burning ,400 miles distant.:(
My friend from B.C sent me this,, because of an experience we shared there.. ;)

1. Because it wasn´t the FBI in the first place.
2. Because the planet´s health is worth unimaginably more than any monetary sum you, Bill Gates, Bono, Oprah, Donald Trump, and the Sultan of Brunei combined could ever dream of.
3. Because it is a wholly unrelated issue.
4. Many of the people you would apparently like to see punished are doing things that are absolutely legal. It is not their fault that a capitalist economy eventually corrupts any and every underlying political framework. It´s our fault for not pushing for change in the system. But of course then WE can´t be greedy anymore either, so we leave the system as it is and simply continue to complain :laugh2:

IMO your statement is equivalent to chastising a cop who´s arresting a shoplifter for doing a crappy job, because he didn´t stop an innocent family mother from buying groceries 4 weeks ago in another country .....
