Hey yall, me again with the Les Paul. I noticed this over in the Trading Post...
...and I found that interesting - I'm probably newbing in numerous ways by asking this, but are pickup covers sometimes the culprit for squealing guitar feedback, as this quote seems to suggest?
I ask because I've been messing about with pickups on my LP because of what I assumed was microphonic stock Gibson pickups - aside from the squealing, I actually like the sound of these things, so if stopping said nasty feedback is simply a matter of taking off the covers, that's a nice cheap way to fix the problem... though I already spent the bucks on a Pearly Gates bridge, which I kinda like too, so it might stay.
Anyways, those covers are soldered on, so I was reluctant to start messing with the pickups anymore than removing them outright - while I'm filled with joy every time I play this guitar, there are still aspects of it that keep me dreaming of getting something different in the long run (mainly I don't like the cream colour), and if I sell it, the less original stuff that's been mucked about the better.
Question #2 is about buzzing - why is it doing it? I've had humbucker equipped guitars before, and while they're never completely silent, this one is buzzing too much, and too strangely, for it to be normal.
What it's doing is emitting what is more or less the typical hum you'd expect from a stock Strat/Tele when either single pickup is selected, and the noise is reduce, but not eliminated, when both pups are selected. I've already had ground loop suggested, and I've been looking in there for possible causes of such, but with no luck. Though I'm hardly an expert at this, especially where LPs are concerned - I'm pretty adept at wiring strats at this point, but the Les Paul world is new and brave. :>
So I guess I'm after any suggestions in terms of what I should check. Are there any parts that are known to cause the thing to start buzzing when they get old and worn out? The caps are the brown disc types, and don't look too healthy, but then that kind never does. They appear to be .022 (it says 223 on the disc), and I have a couple of the chicklet types in my stuff at that value, so I'm thinking I might replace them just for kicks, as I've been told those film ones are better. I also thought about replacing the pots, but at $15 a pop (or pot, rather), I figured I'd best eliminate all other possibilities first.
Sorry for the length of my wind, any thoughts appreciated.
