Re: Most Important Factor in the "Tone" of an Electric Guitar?

Also, I'll point out my long-standing belief that none of this matters to the audience.

Fair point, though I think it's more complex than a simple one-liner.

I think it's both Yes and No. On a conscious level, no, because the average listener can't perceive the specific differences well enough. Subconsciously, I think it's yes. I say this because I have observed an affect in listeners, whether from a live show or playing them recordings to compare. The affect manifests in listeners saying things like they "liked the guitar solo, but it was better at the last show" (even if you are doing a fixed note-for-note solo, same amp and in the same venue, only the guitar different), or "the first recording sounded better to me." They seem to be able to detect some kind of difference in quality of the music/sound but they have no way to articulate what's causing the difference in what they are hearing/feeling.

In my experience, listeners tend to articulate what music (guitar sound/solos) they like along the lines of what "felt better" or "rocked" them, and from that and other statements they've made (when the choice of guitar was the only difference between things they heard), I've come to believe the tone of any instrument in the mix is a more important factor than simply satisfying the player, enabling them to play better. From a listening perspective, I've noticed a guitar with really nice tone will have a very limited frequency range, so it will mix well with all the other instruments and not step on other parts, which contributes to a better overall mix of the music, enabling the listener to enjoy everything that's going on in the song. So I think instrument tone is indeed a useful factor in audience enjoyment and satisfaction, though it certainly may not be one of the most important factors overall.

I think you should have included the rob option. The most important factor in the tone of an electric guitar is the amp.

The poll is about things that are parts of a guitar.

The most important factor in the tone of a guitar is the player.
