Re: Most overrated pedal or type of pedal

I always thought that Man on the Silver Mountain had flanger, it sounds like that, but when trying to figure out how to get that sound I read its not flanger, but foot controlled phaser?

That almost sounds like it is on the entire mix, drums and all.

Re: Most overrated pedal or type of pedal

I would say the most overrated pedal is a tuner. Neil Young never uses one I don't see why I have to.

With Neil, you wouldn't be able to tell if he did.

Re: Most overrated pedal or type of pedal

I gotta say the Fulltone OCD pedal. It's a flawed pedal in my opinion. It's dark and doesn't have a clean attack to it when you try running it stand alone. I took it off my board, put it back on a few times now and it's on the chopping block as it doesn't do what I want it to do. What I have to do to get it close is run a tc electronics Spark booster in front of it to clean it up and drive it the way it should on it's own.
I'll never understand why this pedal is so highly regarded. I have a Boss Waza Blues Driver that sounds 100% better , sounds cleaner, the tone control actually goes from dark to light easy and it has a easier ability to dial in.

Re: Most overrated pedal or type of pedal

Strymon pedals I think are way overrated. I can get as good or in my opinion tone sound functionality out of the Boss 500 series pedals for much less when you have all 3.
The Boss 500 series I feel are superior in every way.

But in the end this is just a personal opinion, all these things are just tools for us to make music.

Re: Most overrated pedal or type of pedal

ALL PEDALS THAT ARE COPIES OF THE ORIGINAL.
Think about it, why would anyone want a copy when they can have the real thing? Maybe they make sense when they are cheaper then the original AND sound damn near as good or even in a few cases sound better because the copy improved on a few flaws.

Re: Most overrated pedal or type of pedal

Proco rat... And turbo rat.

Flame me if you'd like, but I dont like the mushy, dull tone one bit. . . .

While I'm at it, let's add all the big muffs .... Bleh... Everyone talks about them and owns a few, but do they ever get used?

Copies aren't always 100% replicas. Take the Bad Monkey. It's like a Tube Screamer, but with a much needed bass cut and amp/cab simulator. It also happens to be able to be found for $25.

Then there is the pure economic factor of releasing clones. The Klon had a monopoly on Centaur styled pedals and it was out of reach to people like us. Then EHX came along and gave us a cheaper copy of it with an internal buffer/bypass switch. Then Rockett Audio Designs, JHS, Wampler, and everybody else started making Klones, and then the market diversified. So if you don't want a particular flavor of Klone, there are a dozen other varieties out there.

Re: Most overrated pedal or type of pedal

I am all for clones, too, as many improve on the original. The 805 is an ideal Tube Screamer with active EQ and more gain range.

The amount of depht and sustain you gain for long notes with big muff is just phenomal. I was very skeptical about them, until I bought one and learned to play it. Now I love it.

Re: Most overrated pedal or type of pedal

i really dont blame bill finnegan for the klon hype. he wanted to make a great overdrive and did. the guitar nerd community created the hype

he actually has six strobe tuners on stage, one for each string! doesnt help him stay in tune obviously :D

Re: Most overrated pedal or type of pedal

I think Boss is just a bit overrated. They do a lot right, they’ve been at it forever, and they’re probably as reliable as anybody out there, but dollar for dollar I’ve seen a lot of other pedals eat their lunch, when it comes down to pure sound.

mostly agree except the 61 Harmonic tremelo on a Flint -it's unreal.

Except they invented most every digital effect amongst many other analog effects, also when almost every company quit making pedals in the early 80s -they remained as the champion to keep Pedals alive -even EHX quit the pedal industry for a decade.

so I don't know if they CAN be overrated -they are the lifeblood of pedal history.

I broke out all 3 of mine about 3 months ago for the first time in over decade. -I was blown away with that special harmonic content and touch sensitive rich upper mids.

I think your setup may not be optimal for that style of pedal, as mine may not have been in the past when I dismissed them.
