I've been lookin' at all the customs..not sure I like the 'spongy' low end they talk about in the CC though =( other than that, I think it might be for me...don't think the bass would be too much? swamp ash tends to be balanced on the lows and highs with the mids 'scooped' if you can use that term for a tone wood =)

Zakkly why I'd go A2..since highs and bass are pulled back and mids are accentuated.
Spongy is relative...don't automatically think "spongy" means "loose" or "farty"...its just not as tight as A5. Thats what I used to think til I started messing with some A2 pups. Check the R8 clip on my soundclick...www.soundclick.com/litrtrdnck. BB2 w/ A2 mag.

I like the sound of that pickup..nice and crunchy, and like you said, bass isn't farty..but it's full sounding..
how're the harmonics? it's important to me that it be percussive..I have a JB in my alder body lynch which I really dig as well...that's got harmonics out the ass and is very percussive

Pinch harmonics are decent on the BB2..better than a 59 or a Custom, but not as easy to get as a JB or Super Distortion. A5/Ceramics are nearly always easier I think for getting pinches out of. But I didn't find them difficult at all. They have a different tone though...more vocal or sweet...kinda Mathias or early EVH vs. "screamy" sounding like George. But alot of that could be the guitar as well.

well, i have a strat with swamp ash body, neck w rosewood fretboard
and a lil59 in neck position. it's a hardtail strat which i use with strings
011-048.
but i can't tell if my engl really does marshall sound.
i could run through the roland's marshal tsl100 simulation

I tried a 59 (A5) in my hardtail swampash strat, and I thought it sounded pretty good. Swapping the A5 for an A2 gave a pretty good brown sound.
I don't consider ash bright: it has less mids than alder, but alder seems to have more high-highs or presence.

Here's Warmoth's full description of both types.
Ash (Fraxinus americana):
We have two very different types of Ash: Northern Hard Ash and Swamp Ash (Southern Soft Ash). Northern Hard Ash is very hard, heavy and dense. A Strat® body will normally weigh 5 lbs. and up. It's density contributes to a bright tone and a long sustain which makes it very popular. It's color is creamy, but it also tends to have heartwood featuring pink to brown tints. The grain pores are open and it takes a lot of finish to fill them up. Swamp Ash is a prized wood for many reasons. It is a very musical wood offering a very nice balance of brightness and warmth with a lot of "pop". It is a fairly light weight wood which makes it easily distinguishable from Hard Ash. It is, but not all of VH. His homemade used on the first 2 albums is a PAF with one coil rewound. You'll get closer with a '59 in there than the CC but the CC will lend a little more edge to some of the later stuff. But if you want to go total PAF in there, DMZ PAF (not the Pro or Classic either, just the plain 'ole original PAF). Absolutely killer pickup in a strat body.shreder75 said:
