We don't really wanna screw new holes in my guitar, so we were thinking of gluing a piece of wood under the pick up to do a sort of direct mount...is that cool? Or ...

Screws would be too destructive, but gluing an extra piece of wood in there is ok?
Since the extra wood would have to be thick enough to take the full mounting screws, you might have trouble with the height of the pickup, unless you have deep routes.

Is there a mouse in your pocket?
Some people will mill down a piece of wood, say maple, nailed/screwed down in the cavity to build up the height so as to have the correct height for the pickup.

I direct-mounted a soap bar P-90 into an SG. I'm not thrilled with the foam rubber arrangement. I got a pack of shims from Home Depot and used several in each PU slot. Because they're wedge-shaped you stack them and get the height you want. I screwed them into the body, and then screwed the PU into the shims. Not hard to do. You could glue the shims together too, and then screw the whole thing to the body, or just glue everything.

On some guitar designs, direct screw mounting of pickups is the best approach. Suspending the neck/rhythm pickup of a Telecaster via the pickguard seems to rob it of some of its fullness of tone.
