Muff or screamer?

Well I've decided I want an od/dist pedal to go with my new orange for xt gain during leads and whatnot. Now I have to decide if I want to do a big muff or tubescreamer first. I will be building a clown using a kit bought online from byoc or general guitar gadgets. I will probly build both at one point or another, I just want to know which I wanna do first. Which one would you guys try first if you were in my shoes?

If you're gonna boost it, get the screamer. Or the Triboost.

I have a Muff and a TS-808.

The Muff will give you a really fat sound but it won't have the midrange cut (or scream) of a TS.... so it's your call based on what kind of lead tone you want.

That said, boosting a Muff with a TS gives surprisingly good results.

Well I think I'm gonna go ahead and do the TS based on what I've heard here, but do plan on doing the Muff at some point so that's good to hear.

As far as the muff goes, how does it sound thru your orange? I have an orange also, and I'm sure you know how much mid range they have so would the muff boosting one rob you of the mids, or would the mids of the orange compliment it?

The muff is great for busy chords - an impressive background of distortion when your playing rhythm and it's nice for sustainning leads but not rally a good soloing pedal.
TS is cool for faster solos, cutting through the mix, Santana and SRV stuff. Don't like it for rhythm though.
Both are not the "do it all" pedals but combined they cover everything.

It sounds killer through my Orange, but I have the headroom required to make it sound good. Depending on how loud you play a Rocker 30 will probably break up too fast to get the best results out of it. If you're going to boost an R30 I'd defiantly lean towards a TS.

if you're asking, you need to at least try, and preferably own both!

totally different vibes from each pedal, and lots of players have room in their setups for both a fuzz and an OD/Boost.. especially with an orange

The screamer for me, because I'm not a fan of 'fuzz'. However, this thread, and something I read on the Plexi Palace Hiwatt forum have me thinking that I should revisit the fuzz!

My only advise is to buy neither.....but only because there's better options.
A TS sounds slightly thin with a mix of gain/clean. The Big Muff might be a rat's nest for lead tones.

I've honestly never heard of any of those pedals. I'm guessing they're mainly boutique and I'm not willing to spend a lot on pedals at this point. I think I'm just going to go ahead and build a TS and mod it to my liking. Later I'll do a big muff along with some other fx pedals.

As much as I love Muffs and don't use a TS, I'd still advise building the TS first. On the topic of the Muff, before you build, go to Duncanamps.com to download the tone stack calculator. The one I am )still) building will have a 6-way rotary switch to select different tone stacks from classic scoop, to flat mids, mid boost and Swollen Pickle scoop. With a mid boost EQ, (or an EQ after the Muff a la Gilmour) you can get some great singing lead tones.
