I wonder if with my new nitro finishing experience, it's possible to deal with the following issue:
I have a Fender Mustang body a friend refinished about ten years ago, in nitro. My friend showed me the body was split along the seams where the three pieces join; a split on each side of the pocket, around the central block, each of which went about the length of the body itself. In his words: "looks like someone stepped on it, and tried to pry the neck off." It was even possible to split the body & open the cracks slightly; I was lead to believe he glued the body back together with a syringe; I did not witness this however. The guitar was fine for about five years after the refin.
The problem became evident when I moved from the CA desert to a more coastal region with greater humidity. The body splits became visible again, down the back, and even connecting to the neck pocket (as if joining with the typical "neck pocket crack" region of the guitar. I can't pull the two pieces apart (but I'm afraid to use a large amount of force.)
I'm questioning a few things:
-The crack & body overall seem stable. Should I not worry about this? Any good/safe way to test the stability other than prying it apart?
-Given that this is happening, is it possible the seam was never glued? Is it possible a glued seam & humidity change could respond in such a way?
-I'm tempted to just try to Sand the back/neck pocket area of the body down to flat, use wood filler as necessary, and try to blend the finish with the (unaffected) sides and front. Is this a reasonable course of action? Any novel way to secure the gap if I in fact need to?
Yeah- Pics are needed. Will post later.
