MXR Classic Overdrive

I just bought one of these at a guitar center (gig tonight and tubescreamer died (had it for ten years now), was going to get a new Tubescreamer saw the M-66 for $40 and couldn't resist spending $50 less), and I gigged with it straight away tonight. It was actually really good for the money.

I looked it up online, and saw that it has a jumper switch inside the pedal that is actually supposed to switch between the Zakk Wylde overdrive and the Gt-OD that MXR does. if that's true, I'm going to get a toggle switch at Radio Shack tomorrow and pop it in so that I can use the two different overdrives without having to open the pedal up.

I might have gotten the deal of the century without even realizing what I had at first.

yep thats what the switch does, but you need to take the entire pcb assembly out to do it.
Personally i prefer the classic sound rather than the zakk.
But as far as your bargain purchase goes...great! I prefer the mxr any day of the week over any tubescreamer. The mxr sounds a lot like a fulldrive. Bigger, fatter, less compressed and generally meaner and more touch responsive than a ts. I like em regardless of price.

I got one used but mint a while back for around the same price. I tried it originally with one amp I had and hated it. Just sounded bad, then tried it with another amp and it sounds amazing. I put it up for sale and took it down fairly quickly. I'll hold onto it for how good it sounds (even only on the one amp) vs. price.

I prefer almost anything that Dunlop has a hand in over anything else(Dunlop strings are the best, the Way Huge Swollen Pickle is the best fuzz I've ever played, MXR has great stuff, and the Crybaby's are the industry standard for wah pedals). Until now though, I hadn't found a really good overdrive that beat out the Tubescreamer.

Now the only Non Dunlop thing on my board is a Sovtek Electro-Harmonix Small Stone, and unless MXR starts making Phase 90's with "color" toggle switches (switches sounds, I don't know exactly what it does never cared to look), then it's staying. I picked that up used for $60 bucks (should have been closer to $150, but I'm not gonna argue with those idiots at GC), so I seem to have luck with cheap pedals.

For my next bargain buy, I get a vintage Echoplex (valued at about $1,000,000,000) for less than my right arm, or a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

I'm about to go balls deep into MXR territory. I just ordered a Carbon Copy delay (ditching my Boss DD6) and I also have a reissue Script Logo Phase 90 en route.

The M-66 is a great pedal. I like mine so well that I immediately sold my Ibanez TS9 and G&L, Buckshot overdrive pedals. I've been looking for another M-66 to try the switch mod on. I don't want to modify the one I already have.

Guitar center should still have them. Mine has like 12 of them right behind the counter.

I stupidly passed on one of these for $30 on Craigslist. I wish I hadn't, I've been scoping ebay and craigslist for one for a while now with no luck.

There are none on ebay now but last week when I got mine there were 3 or 4 on there, they all ended around $40.

You might be able to call them. It's not listed on their website though, so I don't know if they will ship it.

I just checked Ebay. Theres one on there for $90 brand new. That's expensive for what is should cost, but even then, you're still getting a very good overdrive for less than a TubeScreamer.

I've seen them go pretty high when I've been looking. I'm not in a serious need of one, but I LOVED how the Wylde OD sounded with my Gretsch, and I'd like to have that sound again. I sold my Wylde because it didn't have the switch in it, and I figure I can buy a classic for less than what I sold the Wylde for (I got $70 for it).

I already have one, so I can patiently wait until a deal comes along on Ebay or I take a road trip.

I work for GC and I got one a while ago for like 20 bucks, gotta love that discount. I really like it, I can't imagine spending the extra money for a ts9. It sounds quite a bit like the SD1 but with better dynamics and it's also not as harsh. Unless I can get an amazing deal on another ts style overdrive that I can't pass up, this thing is staying on my board for a while.

I'm also a big MXR fan. If I had to I could redo my pedalboard with all mxr stuff. I'm crazy about the phase 90, and the Carbon Copy is one of the best small delays out there. They're also small, sturdy, and very dependable.
