MXR Doubleshot vs. Tweak fuzz

So, I'm thinking about trying out one of these pedals, I've tried the MXR in guitar center when they were still produced, and I liked the vintage channel a lot, but I don't know how much I'll use the metal channel, but I'd like the versatility. I also have an opportunity to get a tweak fuzz for about the same price, which one is more versatile? I already have a fuzz, so I was leaning towards the MXR, would any of you like to convince me otherwise? The fuzz I have is a z.vex fuzz factory, but I'm seriously considering selling it because it's just not for me...

Thoughts?

I'll trade you the Tweak Fuzz for the Fuzz Factory. I like the Tweak Fuzz, but it's just not for me.

Re: MXR Doubleshot vs. Tweak fuzz

I love my Doubleshot. FWIW some people consider one of the channels more of a fuzz than a distortion on the Double.

Re: MXR Doubleshot vs. Tweak fuzz

The Tweak Fuzz is an amazing li'l box.

I agree. My only beef is that it doesn't really give me the volume I want. It sounds amazing, but I remember the first time playing live with it, I used it for the chorus of one of my songs, and I didn't realize how much volume got cut out before until there were drums behind it. Kind of ruined the moment.

There's a mod for that floating around on the board. Haven't tried it yet myself. Anybody else?

Re: MXR Doubleshot vs. Tweak fuzz

Yeah, anyone who wants more volume from the Tweak Fuzz owes it to themselves to try that mod. The pedal, as we sell it, remains true to the Saraceno Afro Fuzz design. So for production, so far we're sticking to the original design. But this is an easy mod that opens it up a lot.

Re: MXR Doubleshot vs. Tweak fuzz

Are you serious? There's a simple mod to make the Tweak Fuzz louder?!

I've tried that pedal a couple three times and never bought one because of the lack of output. I dug the tone but I had to max the level just to make it even with the original signal and even then it seems a bit weak. When I step on a fuzz I'm looking for bombastic!!!

Ya'll should be making them like that in the first place...

As it stands, I can't use the pedal for gigs. Recording isn't as much of a problem with the volume issue. I generally don't hesitate to take my guitars apart but haven't been comfortable with the idea of doing the mod on my Tweak Fuzz myself. I love the pedal but would love it even more if I could gig with it. No plans to make the change on production models?

Re: MXR Doubleshot vs. Tweak fuzz

Not as of yet, but I'm not saying never. But seriously it is a super simple mod to make. It's easier than any guitar wiring. If you can do guitar work, you can do this mod.

Re: MXR Doubleshot vs. Tweak fuzz

I want to do it so bad but couldnt find the resistor at my local RS. When I took a look inside its real plain like Franks instuctions but still way smaller than any wiring I've ever done. I'm a little hesitant even if I can find the resistor.

Same here...

Re: MXR Doubleshot vs. Tweak fuzz

I don't know about the Tweak fuzz, but the MXR Doubleshot was garbage to me. I owned one a long time ago and while I got some usable tones out of it, it can't come remotely close to an amplifier that can do overdrive. Out of all the things I've purchased, that pedal was one of my greatest regrets... I couldn't get rid of it fast enough.

Re: MXR Doubleshot vs. Tweak fuzz

Just out of curiosity, does the custom shop do pedals?

Big, nebulous questions of the month:

"Would you like us to?"

"What are fair prices for sending in pedals to be modded?"

"Would you like to send your Shape Shifter in for the "tap tempo active when in bypass" mod? Or your Twin Tube for a Buddy Guy style blues mod, or lower gain tubes? Or your Booster for a lower gain mod?" etc.

Re: MXR Doubleshot vs. Tweak fuzz

Wouldn't the Tweak Fuzz be a better pedal with the mod incorporated into production?

I like to hear more about these mods Frank. especially the Buddy Guy for the TTC. I bet its more like 2 rhythm channels :)

OK, not reading what anyone else said . . . here is my thoughts.

About 3years ago i wanted nothing more than the MXR Double shot, because i allready had a Big Muff.
I never got one at a good price so i left it eventualy.
Fastworward 3year on . . . while i was away from home (...and 80% of my gear got stolen) i tested a Tweak Fuzz in a very small mom & pop store in FL US (i am not from the US), and with ins 2min of testing, i knew i had to have this box.
At the time (3 years ago) i thought the Double Shot woud be a great DOOM/Sludge/Stoner-box, but the Tweak Fuzz can do soooo much more in the same genre, and out side it !
For my music taste, "DOOM/Sludge/Stoner" & "Fuzzed-up Garage Blues", the Tweak Fuzz is a God-sent !

YMMV . . . as is always the case !

Hope this helps though !
