mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

hi

micro flanger : this flanger has only 2 knobs

is that enough to play Van Halen, The cure, Disco or other songs?

it looks like the EVH Flanger with 4 buttons is a bit superfluous

i like transparent sound: i don't like when you have distortion /gain + effect and when the sound of the effect eats the distorsion

the micro flanger is true bypass and analog
the evh flanger is not true bypass except the 35th anniversary model

because the EVH version has one more knob to have his preset :)

Is that like a single preset button? I never noticed the little button.

Oh, I guess it is a knob as you mentioned. Is it like a modded standard version knob?

Re: mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

i think the black version is the same the EVH's version

The red and grey version (EVH) have one button to have the "enchained" settings

the red version is the only one to have true bypass

MAXON and Ibanez have good flangers too
so, it's a choice...
seeing a lot of videos :)

Re: mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

Maxon makes a lot of the Ibanez stuff for them.

As for the MXR v. MXR EVH question, one of them malfunctions and then blames you.

Re: mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

I can only speak for the EVH Flanger since it is the one that I own. I absolutely love it. You can get all crazy with it if you'd like, but I honestly bought it just to keep it on Eddie's preset, and that's what I do. To me he always had the perfect Flanger sound. It is so perfect sounding on a clean channel, but it sounds just as great with distortion. There's nothing like plugging your guitar into it, tuning down to Drop D Flat, and playing "Hear About It Later", and sounding just like the recording....lol. What a great freakin Flanger sound!!

Of the 4-knob models, the gray and EVH model are the exact same except for the added "button" (not a knob) on the EVH that bypasses all controls for the "Unchained" settings.

The 2-knob flanger has a preset width and manual setting. You can only adjust the speed (rate) and regen. Not a bad flanger, but not as flexible as the 4-knob.

Another one to look at is the old Boss BF-2. A great flanger in a smaller package if pedalboard real estate is a concern.

I had the 4 knob and moved to the Micro. I like it better and it saves pedal board space. It has all of the sounds of the 4 knob that I liked. However, I lost the ability to communicate with underwater tinfoil aliens.

Re: mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

The EVH is really cool if you use the EVH setting. Set the controls for a watery, shimmery flange, then the EVH button for the jet plane. Two "presets" available.

Re: mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

is it transparent ?
amp+flanger+disto +guitar
and with the disto i like to hear the disto even if there is a flanger on it

Re: mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

I have the micro flanger and the full sized MXR Flanger.

The micro flanger will get you in the right zip code as far as everything you mentioned...especially live.

The Eddie Flanger has his signature Unchained sound dialed in for you as a preset but if you already didn't know, Eddie sets his flanger to everything at 12 o'clock. So there you have it.

You can either bend over and hit that little switch that you will never hit with a boot on or you can bend over and set your dials to 12 o'clock.

I personally have the standard MXR Flanger because Robert Smith used that particular pedal on the Nocturne tour with Siouxsie & the Banshees.

Other than that though, he used a Boss FL2.

I have achieved excellent Cure sounds from a Deluxe Electric Mistress though.

Mad Bob used the MXR Flanger-on-a-stick to emulate the sounds of John McGeoch.

Re: mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

i think the MXR EVH Flanger can give some interesting and crazy sounds sometimes that does not have the micro flanger
true? or not useful ?

but, yes, there is also the electric mistress, new analog and green model and true bypass

Re: mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

Mine must have been a red model in the white casing. It was true bypass. Having control over Regeneration made it more useful for how I used it. It may also be worth noting the larger pedals run 18v (vs 9). You might say it needs to be kept unchained from the rest of the pedals on a 1Spot...

Re: mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

18v with a power supply NOT! included

i could have the red flanger
but maybe next time

Re: mxr flanger vs mxr EVH flanger

i would like to know if the sound is like" enchained "= just a little sound not above the sound of the guitar

my flanger does not do that
the sound is above the disto= we can't listen to the gain or disto
just the flanger even with regen at 0%
