E.P. You are a badass dude. Make no mistake about that..and much much respect for one of the orginol forum bros, cause I am not, and you are an uber worthy gearhead, let me make that perfectly clear no matter how stoned and stupid I might get ..but actually I really don't want to be like that anymore, so am glad I got kind of a wake up call in light of some recent threads.
But..I was really surprised by that Wards amp I got that you like. It really is a Microphone only amplifier. No guitar inputs. It sounds cool as hell though with a guitar..extremly so, and just as a comparison I had a old near n\mint Alamo Paragon 50 watt guitar amp I sold for almost 400.00 that was more like a poor mans Bassman, but didn't sound near as great as the Wards IMO, so your instincts are spot on. I really didn't even know that Wards was a US made Valco amp , which I'm sure no one else did either, or I would have never got it for 127.00.
I think there are some more out there. I only need one. Unfortuantely when I put a different power Tranny in it, it might ruin the crazy sound I love about it..depending. I don't know if its the Transformer making it get so hot..but if it is a shorted PT lead one can not assume it may sound as good with a replacement. I am assuming a good tech could find a good old replacement power transformer for that Tranny , if it so happens that is the culprit.
I can also try and find one and send you the link if i see another pone. There had to be lots of them made.. "Wards" was a major department store chain all over the U.S. before it flopped In the 90's..which was bizare cause at the time no one really saw it coming.
