MXR Fullbore Metal Question

I'm pretty new to pedals and I just got this MXR Fullbore Metal. I just have a little Marshall mini stack for practicing in the bedroom. I have read around and some people have suggested that you just set the tone controls on the amp to 12 oclock and do all the tone adjustments on the pedal. I have also seen a few say to crank everything on the amp and then adjust the pedal. What would some of you on here recommend?

get the amp sounding how you like it first, then add the pedal to taste...kinda like adding gravy to a nice steak.

Ever play a Fullbore Metal? It's a high output distortion pedal, not an overdrive.

Set your amp clean, controls at noon, get the pedal close to what you want. You can always use the amp controls for a little more tuning if you want to pull out the mids or add a little more treble/bass.

I would think a screamer into the Marshall would sound pretty metal.

I used to have a fullbore. I liked it because it looked neat, had lots of knobs I thought I'd use and the dude from ProGuitarShop made it sound awesome.

I made it sound shrill and crappy and got lost in the knobs. Just went back to my simple metal muff for my metal fix.

Hope you can figure it out! it is probably awesome if you can dial it in

Re: MXR Fullbore Metal Question

Some general advice for life all around:

#1 Learn how to PLAY THE AMP! learn how each individual eq works, Learn how they interact (if they interact!). Learn how the gain works, and how it works in conjunction with volume . Learn to get a solid sound for Blues, Jazz, Rock, and Metal. Learn how to make it work for different guitars and pickups.

Example: I like a Nice 5/3/7 (B/M/T) setting for Metal with a 5150 amp model. However - the 5 Bass is a bit much for the Les PAuls I usually use. Especially with a Custom pickup. I might go 3/2/7. However, using a Distortion, I might go 5, 3, 6. For Gain, rarely past 6.

For a MArshall and hard rock sound though, I'll go with a 3 bass, 7 mods and 7 treble. Gain maybe down to between 4 and 7. But I'll pump the volume some.

For blues, I really start with maybe a 5/8/4 setting. MAybe use a Fender model. Gain could vary greatly.

Learn to play the amp.

#2 Learn how the pedal sounds and works best. They are all different. Some are great as Pedal into clean. Just use the pedal for the whole dirt tone. Metal Muff for example. Others are better into a semi distorted Tube amp. DS-1 is a classic example. Still others like an already pushed amp to put it over the top. And Overdrive like a TS-9 into a maxed Fender perhaps. You just gotta try things.

Finally: That little Marshall you have is a solid state. For solid state I generally like to go with sound from pedal into a clean amp. But again - try it every which way:

Clean with mega distortion and an even level
Clean with a push from the level on the pedal
Slightly dirty with more dirt and/or level from the pedal.

General rule is Tube + Level from pedal = More gain. Flavor with gain from pedal to taste.

Clean solid state + Pedal distortion and no level/even level.

But try them all and go with what you dig!

I say clean setting such as 7/4/8 on amp, 3 gain/vol, then max the pedal except for level with tone in the middle. Tweek bass and mids on amp to taste. Then ice the cake with the pedal tone knob.
