MXR MC-404 CAE Wah Pedal: Any Good?

Re: MXR MC-404 CAE Wah Pedal: Any Good?

I've been corresponding with Kevin. And as you said, the guy is very helpful.

Anyways, he told me that I'd be happy with both.

So could not decide yet!

:)

Either a Rippah Q or a Colorful Clone.

But I think I am leaning more towards the Rippah Q side, I already have Teese's Colorsound clone.

Kev is a great guy and a big help...

If I were you I'd go with the Rippah no question...you already have a good Colorosund wah sound, add something else!

Re: MXR MC-404 CAE Wah Pedal: Any Good?

I just bought a MC-404 to replace my aging Clyde (standard version, old white casing). Originally I bought it for two reasons: to try something different, and because it has an LED to say whether it's on or not (nothing drives me nuts more than having my wah on at the start of a gig and not knowing why everything sounds all trebly).

My initial observations are that the Clyde has a larger and more pronounced sweep, but the CAE satisfies my expectations pretty well. As I get used to it I probably won't miss the Clyde.

Doc - i fyou have not yet got the rippah or whatever then here's my vote for the MXR.

Its wicked.

Mike rocker mentioned that the wah is not very pronounced -- but im guessing he did not access the internal q trimmers and gain control for the two inductors. You can trim it to be totally over the top if thats what you are after.

How does it compare to a GCB crybaby - clearer, fatter, more flexible and no volume drop.
Hendrix - way better for the same reasons.
My old vox - again - the yellow fasel option is much sweeter.
Modern vox - way better.
Morley? - warmer and more vocal - also - works great with high gain, and given the 2 inductor options it is more versatile.
The Red fasel option is really cool too - thick and throaty. Like you, i play mostly using humbukers and i tend towards the darker end of the sonic spectrum - i use the red fasel mostly and love it.

I dont use the built in boost, but its there as an option too.

Its a killer pedal , and the best crybaby ive tried (however i cant comment on the fulltone or teese wahs cos i have never tried those). I know the grass is always greener, so my MXR is staying on my board until someone lends me a teese etc, so i can give them a fair comparison. Until then, ill say its the most useable and sweet sounding wah ive tried. True bypass, tweakable and all the mods alrwady built into it. Its a pro piece of gear right out of the box.

Re: MXR MC-404 CAE Wah Pedal: Any Good?

Hi guys,

I dunno what went on here, but anyways, as far as the wah goes... I ended up getting a Colorful Clone from Kevin. It is a great wah, very vocal... In fact, I love it way more than my other "good" wah, RMC Wheels of Fire...

Kevin is the man!

Possibly the best wah on the market is the MC404. I could do without the true bypass though. I never cared about true bypass, I would rather have a good buffered bypass.

Why do you reply to old threads and contribute nothing at all to them?

And talk contradictory sheit.

The Bonamassa is incredible. I checked it out again today. Perfect sweep and rich, sweet tone. I sold my Clyde Deluxe. I never saw the need for 3 different wah tones, just stick with one, makes life as a gigging guitarist much simpler. Otherwise, do the CAE MC404, sounds better than the Clyde.
That said, the Bonamassa is darn near perfect. The Cantrell and Wylde are also incredible.

Re: MXR MC-404 CAE Wah Pedal: Any Good?

Weird!

:33:

I now have 3 good wahs. A RMC Teese wheels of fire, a Wilson Colorful Clone (vintage spec...) and a Wilson 12 position Wilson Wah (vintage spec and all). The first two are a bit different wahs, Macari type of wahs. The Wilson wah is sorta more regular Vox kinda wah, sounds great and provide tonsa tweakability...

Still I gotta confess that (with my tastes and all) I like the Colorful clone the best... Very vocal very deep wah!

Never heard of this MXR way. That's not a bad thing, but then again, just sayin'

Also - 535Q and move on

Me, I'mn sticking with this:

Re: MXR MC-404 CAE Wah Pedal: Any Good?

Custom Audio Electronics MC-404 wah beats out the Fulltone Clyde and most of the other Dunlop wahs. The Budda is also another outstanding wah. I liked the Bud wah more than the Fulltone as well.

Sorry to say I was not thrilled with this wah initially. I am loving this pedal now. Not sure why I was so hard on it when I first tried it. I may say this is the best wah I have played in 30 years!
It beats out my Teese Wizard, Fulltone Clyde, Standard Crybaby, Crybaby 535Q, Budda, modified Vox, 95Q and other I can't recall. This 404 is the last wah I will ever need.
