MXR Micro Amp

Finally got me a Micro Amp. Very nice clean boost. Good as advertised. I'm going to pit this against my MXR OD (currently on my pedal board) and TS9.

Anyone tried this through the loop?

Re: MXR Micro Amp

Yeah I've used one for years now in the loop for a lead boost and it works a treat!

I do use my amps overdive for the most part. If I use it in the front end it does a great job of puching a crunchy sound a bit harder.... whilst retaining the amps sound, never getting muddy. Excellent pedals for the money.

try it after your od pedals too. Its less explosive than in the loop and will make use of your amps natural preamp sound.

Well, my preamp gain is maxed out most of the time. I'm using an OD pedal to get to metal "chug chug" level especially with low/medium output pups.

This is exactly what's happening right now. I noticed that there's not any "coloration" of my amps distortion (with preamp gain dimed) although it's just a little brighter.

What's going in the loop right now is an MXR 10-band EQ and/or Maxon para-EQ pedal. I like the additional tone shaping with the EQ pedals -- giving it a mid boost for soloing. What I was thinking though is driving the poweramp tubes harder? Not sure if I can do that with the micro amp and still protect my ears.

At one stage I had a Micro amp and a CAE line driver (essentially the same pedal) and had one in the front, the other in the loop. If I set my amp to crucnh, and set the level on the one in the front high then it pushed the amp harder. It was a versatile set up too, it never got muddy and sounded great.

You are one of those people who thinks having a boost like that in the loop defeats the purpose of having a pre-amp?

Re: MXR Micro Amp

The MXR is a great booster. I've used it in the loop to get clean boost for leads. I've used it in front of my other OD pedals to push them even harder. I've used it after all of my pedals, but still feeding my preamp, to give a bit of a boost and to thicken my sound, driving the front end of my amp. Whereever I used it, it did a great job. It didn't do anything without getting a good result.

The Micro Amp is so versatile, it is one of my favorite boxes.

Re: MXR Micro Amp

I have an old old one without an LED. LOVE IT! My favorite way to solo boost.

Re: MXR Micro Amp

How would the Micro Amp in a loop sound for a solo boost compared to a modified Boss GE-7 which is what I have been using. Thanks!

Re: MXR Micro Amp

I don't thik this would worked for me, I am going to use a fully modded GE-7 because I not only want transparency, but I want the ability to darken the highs for solos.

Re: MXR Micro Amp

I used a GE7 as a solo boost in the loop and it worked fine but after a while I started to detect a certain 'transistory' quality to the sound that I didn't care for. A lot more circuitry in a graphic than in a simple boost.

Re: MXR Micro Amp

The fact that it doesn't color the tone is a negative for me. For leads I like added mids and lowered highs. Don't you find solos should be fat and warm and different than your lead tone?
Maybe I will try the MICRO first. :)
