MXR Micro Flanger

I've never owned a flanger until yesterday! I've decided I wanted to do "Nobody's Fault But Mine" in the set for the run of gigs I'm putting together for my 60's/70's cover band, so the search began last week. Since it was really only for one song, I didn't want to go too over the top, so I settled on an early 80's MXR Micro Flanger. It's got limited controls compared to some of the top end stuff, but I really like the sound of it. It's got some quirky bubbles and blips at the extents of its range, but they somehow add to the flavour of it. I know they are reissuing these but I found this original one on eBay and picked it up. Here's a quick clip doing the opening lines from "Nobody's Fault," albeit with one guitar instead of four, but you get the idea. I put some clean chord stuff on the end as well.

Cool! What other units did you try out, Geoff? For the clip you played, that unit sounds like it's got a bit too much metallic tone (regeneration?) to it.

Re: MXR Micro Flanger

I didn't try anything really, I just listened to a few demos and liked the sound of this one! I hear a fair amount of that metallic clang in JP's sound in Nobody's Fault, and that's pretty much what I was going for.

I want one. I love my Phase 90, but want one more knob instaed of 4+ on a flanger.

Re: MXR Micro Flanger

Well..I just checked the clip you posted and listened tothe intro on "Nobody's Fault But Mine" and at this point I'm leaning torwards Jimmy using the Phase 90 AND some tape flanging...

All that said, your clipsis pretty killer!

Re: MXR Micro Flanger

Those Micro Flangers are cool!

So cool in fact that MXR just reissued them!

That said, wasn't "Nobody's Fault But Mine" Jimmy's Phase 90's???

There's quite a few tracks on that riff including an upper octave part, and it sounds to me like there might be phasing on one but I'm hearing something that sounds more like flanging amongst them as well. I've got a late 70's block Phase 90 but it doesn't seem to do the trick on its own. I saw the reissues, but they will obviously contain the current production BBD chips, which is why I went for this puppy.

Yes, agreed, it sounds like there's a bit of both going on. I might try adding the Phase 90 in there as well and see what I get.

Actually, just as in interesting side note...Dunlop had custom made BBD's made for the reissue Micro Chorus and Micro Flanger...they said that nothing current on the market had the right souind...

I haven't tried a reissue yet so I don't know how they ar ebut kudos for Dunlop for going the extra mile!

Yeah, that's impressive alright. They could have easily leaned on the reputation of the originals and sold a few with the standard current production stuff. That fares well for the reissues to be a good thing, they can't be far of release so we'll soon see, and hear.

Hi C,

What is the exact label of the chorus? There are so many versions of MXR (e.g. Phase 90) so that at time it might be confusing you know...

Is it MXR Micro Chorus, or Micro Chorus Reissue?

They just call it chorus but it is a reissue...

Here is a link to it:

Also, a clip, if you listen long enough...

As well as the Micro Flanger and a few others...

Micro Chorus starts at around 4:05

Thanks man!

:)

And, meanwhile, I was trying to convince myself to get my board a bit smaller.
