My amp "booms" when I turn it on and off

My Tube Works amp makes those loud and nasty booms when I turn it on, wen I turn it off and sometimes when I turn the lights in my house on and off...

It was always the case with it... it was made in the US and I used it with an external Convertor (now it has an internal one).

Anyone knows what the problem might be?

It's a two channel hybrid combo (with a 12AX7 tube for overdrive), and spring reverb...

Re: My amp "booms" when I turn it on and off

i've got a Tubeworks Mosvalve 1160 s/s poweramp that i use with my Line 6 Pod Pro preamp/multi-effects unit.this poweramp makes a "boom" noise(heard thru the speaker cab)when i turn it "on" also.i bought it used about 4-5 years ago and it made that sound from day one.i have had two different amps techs from two different shops listen to this concern and, according to them, with solid state power amps-this can be a "normal characteristic",up to a certain degree.in my case, this noise upon power-up was within an "acceptable" level.at least, that's what i'm told...hope that helps.

I used to have a solid state Fender Performer 1000 which was apparently a hybrid amp...it was meant to have a valve in the preamp stage but I never pulled it apart to see it. Anyway it always used to make a "boom" when I turned it on and off, especially when I turned it off. Just thought this was normal, especially since solid state stuff doesn't have standby switches usually.

I wouldn't worry, unless it's booming randomly during playing. If it's just when you turn it on and off I think it's normal dude.

My old MosValve did the pop thing when it was powered off (or on, don't exactly remember) also, it is apparently normal for them.

Re: My amp "booms" when I turn it on and off

This is from SWR's FAQs:

Q: When I turn my SWR amplifier's power switch to the "On" position, I hear a "pop" sound through my speakers.
A: This may be the top concern among SWR owners. Unfortunately, there is no effective way to resolve this issue without taking measures that would be detrimental to both the tone quality and reliability for which SWR amplifiers are known. Although many users consider the "pop"—a transient heard at power-up—to be disconcerting, it is normal and will not damage your loudspeakers.

Elimination of the power-on transient would require additional circuitry and the inclusion of a component called a "relay" (relays are known to degrade signal quality and are prone to failure). When a relay failure occurs—which is not unusual—it can cause the amplifier to completely lose output, requiring significant downtime for repair. Hence, SWR chose not to incorporate such components into its amplifier designs. If you still wish to avoid hearing the power-on transient, the following actions may be taken:

• For amplifiers with a speaker on/off switch, set the speaker switch to the "Off" position, power on the amplifier, then set the speaker switch to the "On" position.
• For modular amplifiers without a speaker on/off switch, connect your speaker cable to the amplifier's speaker outputs after power up if you choose. It's important, however,to make sure that you aren't playing through the unit and that no signal is present when you make the connection.

Re: My amp "booms" when I turn it on and off

The problem with the amp is that it sometimes booms when you turn the lights on and off... it happens randomly and didn't happen in the one gig I played with it. In my former band I mainly used a Marshall that I never owned.. now I feel like I should get a new amp. can't risk booms on stage whenever the bartender turns on the cofee machine...

I think you will get those kinds of things happening with most amps if the power is wired a certain way in the building you're in. It would only be able to be heard I'd think if you weren't playing anything at the time, otherwise even if it did happen to come through at a gig you'd never even notice above your playing.

I happens with the Tube Works everywhere.

Not with other amps I have played...
