My amp is too piercing!

Any usage in a band??
How did that fare?

This may very well be the thing, I'm yet to use it in a non-bedroom situation. We haven't met up as a band for a little while, so I'm guessing it needs some breaking in!

When I got a 2x12 marshall cab for my DSL50 at first when I Played through it I had the exact same problem. So I just connected a cd player up to it and cranked that baby for about 7 or 8 hours, and walla!

I'd love to do this, but even though it's only a 40 watter, that mother goes bloody loud. Any ideas on how to crank for eight hours without making enemies? Like, putting a couple of matresses in front of the cab? :) I'm in a detatched house, so I guess that's a start.

Cheers for the advice everyone!

Well one thing you could try is Cranking it for the hours that your neighbors do be off at work, Mabye even if you had to go to the hassle of buying one of those plug-in timer socket dealeys. Then mabye set it to turn off after 4 or 5 hours of play if you were to leave for work etc.etc..?

Re: My amp is too piercing!

If all else fails you might want to try an EQ pedal to try and taper off some of that high end. Try one either in line with your guitar or thru the effects loop to see what works best.

Hey guys, This has been driving me mad, but I recently got a Marshall DSL 401, and no matter what I do, it seems like, the overdrive sound is too piercing. Like, slightly painful to listen to. Even with the treble all the way down! I've tried with a couple of guitars, albeit only at low to low-moderate volumes. Any ideas what could be wrong? Should I get it looked at? -Dave

Me, I'd have it looked at.

Yup, thats what I did, (See previous post)

I gave mine about 8-10 hours of high volume playing and walla!

:EDIT: oh yes, I just plugged my cd player into the input of my amp and let if off on it's own!
Hmm, never thought of putting it through input of the amp. I just output the sound from the computer directly to my cab. It just seems like a waste to have your power tubes run current through them for hours just to play music. Thats why I like the directly to the speakers approach better.

Re: My amp is too piercing!

Isn't it dangerous to run a line-level unit directly into a speaker-level jack? I was thinking of using my DJ setup to break in one of my cabs, but I would probably have to run through the power amp section first, rather than just plugging my DJ mixer into the cab.

But on the original topic, an EQ unit is an awesome idea. EQ is one of my favorite effects. Mastering the use of an EQ pedal eliminates the need for many other effects.

Re: My amp is too piercing!

Hi, If I can add my two cents (for what it's worth) - the speakers have a lot to do with it. I bought some Jensen Mod 50's for my DSL and it really smoothed it out. You have to really crank the amps lead channel though because they're not really efficient as some other speakers (depending upon how loud you actually play). The Celestion 75's have an edge to them that you can't dial out - you either like it or don't. I'd suggest the Celestion G12H30's, two of them with two Greenbacks.

We all seem to want the full blown sound that bands get in an arena but we're only playing for 200 people! I think turning down the preamp a bit and turning up the master more will give you a fatter sound - you want to get more of the power tube sound, that's where the tone and touch are found. You can get away with a good 15-30 watt amp and play really loud. I can't understand why people use 100 watt amps and turn the preamp up all the way? Needless to say I got rid of my DSL. The nicest, smoothest sounding Marshall I ever owned was a Jubilee (50 watt) - now that was a great sound. I prefer the 4 input Marshalls cranked a bit with some pedals. Just my two cents!

Are you running some kind of solid state power amplifier from your 'puter to the Cab?
Just wondering because the reason for doing that Is to get the Speaker thumping at a very high noise level
