My amp needs to see the doctor

Re: My amp needs to see the doctor

Erik,

I would bet that your preamp tubes are ok, like was said above, the PI might need replaced. Drake's are tough and if by some chance one did need replaced at least they are pretty inexpensive and easy to find.

Good Luck!

Clayton

I hope so. Been doing some research on the transformers used and I'm finding that Drakes were used in the 50 watters and Dagnalls in the 100 watters and somewhere along the line the 50 watters got Dagnalls too. Since mine is 100 watts, they're most likely Dagnalls. Someone told me they were Drakes. Ahh, it doesn't matter. As long as their rugged and do the job, they could say "Acme" with Wyle E. Coyote on them for all I care...LOL.

Re: My amp needs to see the doctor

Update: Dropped the amp off and well, it will be 7-10 days before I hear anything, maybe sooner. He's got quite a backlog right now.

Damn straight...lol. Gonna see about hooking up a 1/4" jack to the speaker wire from the amp so I can hook it up to the 4x12. :D

Anytime it's happened to me, it was usually a result of the bias being way off, and I ruined the tubes. The reason was the bias just drifted off on it's own, over time. I doubt you fried a tranny. You probably just need new power tubes, biased perfectly. Marshalls are a hard amp to destroy.

That's what I'm thinking. New tubes and maybe need to replace a couple of fried resistors on the tube socket. And correct whatever went haywire in the bias circuit. Probably minor stuff. Lew

Re: My amp needs to see the doctor

UPDATE:

Got a call from the tech yesterday. My worst fear has been realized. The power transformer has a short in it. After I told him about the tubes glowing brightly before it shut down he said the output transformer may have issues as well but he wouldn't know for sure without a load on it and signal pumping through. But considering the behavior it showed before going down, there's a good chance there's a problem there too.

What I do like about these guys is their honest and upfront with you. The replacement transformers would be from Marshall so no cheap knockoffs. They get all Marshall replacement parts from Marshall or Korg USA.

So now I'm in decision making mode. The cost to fix it isn't that bad, but about high enough that I could get a replacement amp, same model, if I can find one. I dunno. I really love this amp and that's the hard part. Thankfully the Lead 12 sounds like a million bucks through the 4x12 to make due for now, and it keeps up with the band perfectly. That makes it a little easier to handle.

Re: My amp needs to see the doctor

Thats cool to hear the Lead 12 is good thru the 4x12.....:)

WEll i hope it is not extremely expensive to get get your amp back in top order... I keep wanting to take my 800 head in for repairs but everytime i turn around 2 things happen... A- i have to pay bills, or B i blow my money away on something else like my holiday coming up! Man i want that head fixed!

But good luck on your 900!

Hey Chris. Yeah, the Lead 12 slays through the 4x12. It's a combo so I had to put a jack in place. Just a splice of the wires, jack on amp side, plug on speaker side, so now I can use either the built-in speaker or a speaker cab. Great little amps.

Right now I'm leaning towards letting it sit as-is, getting a Crate Powerblock for the headroom and then saving up for a Mission Aurora. I'm getting an Aurora anyway, it's just a matter of the fundage. Then when I can, take care of getting it up and running again. It's just bad timing that it went down when it did.

ya these things happen when you least expect it... good luck with getting the Mission amp.... never heard of them....

I plugged into my old Roland practice amp the other day that i told you i had used thru a 4x12 bass cab in 1990 because of the bad luck of not owning anything better.... Thru it's own speakers it sounds awful but thru some good speakers it is not bad.... Still i think i'll garage sale it oneday.

Re: My amp needs to see the doctor

Not getting the Marshall fixed right now. The cost to fix it is about the same to replace it and I'm just not ready to throw that kind of money at it when I could get a new amp. So, with JeffB's help and advice, I'm checking out the Vox Valvetronix amps, the 100 watt head and 50 watt combo. Since it's such a diverse amp it may be the perfect one for what my band does (classic rock covers).

I got to check both out by sheer luck yesterday while getting some strings. Didn't know this shop carried them. So I played a G&L Tribute Legacy (HSS) through them. First impression (after not playing them for a while) is good. Now I just need to play one or a couple of my own guitars through them. Leaning more towards the combo because of the speaker out....I can use it as-is in a small venue or plug in the cab in a larger venue or outdoors.

At some point I will have the Marshall fixed, just not now.

Re: My amp needs to see the doctor

Best of luck with the Marshall... I really liked those clips you posted.. And everytime someone on another forum ask for Marshall clips or Humbuckers into Marshall, I always ask them to go to your site..

So.. We're all hoping that it works again.. ;)

Re: My amp needs to see the doctor

Hey, thanks, jony. I appreciate the references. It's cool to know the stuff I have up there is getting looked at and listened to.
