My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

It's looking great. Being able to glue the neck in at the beginning of the project must have been a good feeling, because then it's the start of an actual instrument.

I can't tell from the pics ... did you mask the sides of the fretboard down to where it meets the mahogany ? Have you given some thought to the fact that there will be a slight 'ridge' when you remove the tape, and that that phenomena will occur with any coats you apply ?

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Thanks, guys.

Crusty, I did mask the sides of the fretboard. I had thought of that ridge occurring and it will have to be dealt with. A very very light sanding with really really fine sandpaper will take care of that.

I've got a bit of sanding ahead of me. The sanding sealer really raised the grain. Once it's sanded back I should get the surface I want for the faded look.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Sanding is done and ready for paint. Unfortunately it is too hot to spray right now so it may wait until we cool down here. It's smooooooth. The faded type finish is going to be great, me thinks. :)

Looks good Bro! I happen to like and welcome the volute.

You get that Lollar ordered up yet?

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Me too, Jeff. I like the volute too. It's a great take on a classic style but with more modern "adjustments" done to it.

The Lollar hasn't been ordered yet, and neither has any of the hardware. Gotta get that done in the next day or two and also get the paint.

I'm in debate as to whether to put a logo on the headstock or not. Part of me wants to and part of me doesn't. I've also been toying around with the idea of painting it white too instead of the traditional black. Not 100% sure on that yet. Might require a mockup to decide.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Whos is the forum bro who does engraving? You could design a nickle or quarter sized round badge and rout it into the headstock before clear coating.

Gosh - it is easy for me to spend your labor and money!

That's a great looking guitar, Erik. It looks like there is no optimum painting weather in sight.

Andrizzle does engraving.

I had thought about an inlay of some sort for the headstock but decided not to. It takes away from the simplicity that the SG Jr is. If anything, I may have my initials engraved in to the truss rod cover.

Hardware is on the way. Pickup and pickguard will be ordered in the next few days.

Ultra cool. I hear one of those DC Jrs calling my name...

Have a look at this seller's custom truss rod covers, you specify what you want engraved and what font style, and it costs less than $20.

May i give you a tip that could save a lot of unneccesary work ? Remove any masking tape from the guitar if it's going to be more than one day until more finish work is done. I know it seems pointless to remove the tape from a carefully-masked neck only to re-apply new tape a few days later, but believe me, not doing this will cause problems. Remove masking tape by doubling it back on itself, don't pull it away from the job at 90 degrees or any other angle.

What pickup are you thinking about using ??

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

What did you go with?

Gotoh wraparound and Gotoh sealed tuners from Mojotone. Also got a pair of Gotoh oversized strap buttons. Pickup answer below. :)

DO IT!!!! LOL. I'm really enjoying working on it.

Thanks for the tips. Thinking about it, I see what you mean in regards to the tape. Residue left behind, drying up and tearing. Yeah, I will take it off tonight when I get home.

I already bought a truss rod cover from Mojotone. It needs some fab work as the bottom of it has a screw hole and it won't be able to be used because the truss rod is right there. It'll be more like the one you made for your project, flat bottom.

As for the pickup, I'm going to get a Lollar Dog Ear P-90.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

All of the hardware has arrived, with the exception of the pickup, but that is really electronics, so it was time for the dry fit. This evening I was able to get the tuners fitted with the screw holes drilled on the back of the headstock, the strap buttons are in place, and the bridge is on. All of the hardware is Gotoh and was ordered from Mojotone.

There is one small snag with the bridge and that is the bridge post inserts sit in the holes a "tiny" bit loose. To give an idea of how tiny, I wrapped blue painters tape around the inserts just once and they fit in the holes snug. A better method besides the painters tape will be used to keep them in when I'm ready to put them in permanently.

Since the hardware is on, I couldn't help but put some strings on it and tune it up. Now, the nut still needs some work and a full setup done once it is completed but at least I could get a good idea of how the wood is. I am happy to say that this Junior is one resonant guitar. I can feel an A chord ring from the neck all the way down in to the body. That tells me the neck/body joint is good.

The strings will stay on for a while to test the overall strength of the joint under string tension. Oh yeah, balance on the strap....perfect, even without the additional weight of the pickup. Next step...paint! But it is still over 100 degrees Fahrenheit so the wait for a cooldown continues.

SERIOUSLY enjoying this thread, being a long-time fan of SG's and all. I wonder if they have an SG Special kit.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Did you like the Minwax Sanding Sealer?

Where did you get it? (presumably Lowe's or Home Depot, but I have to ask).

Thanks for keeping up with it. I'm really enjoying doing the work on it.

They don't have a SG Special kit but they do have a Les Paul Junior routed for two P-90's now.

Yes, I did like working with the Minwax stuff. It went on really good with a high quality brush, and sanded back really nice using 320 grit. I got it at Home Depot in a small can in the paint section. It was either that or a big gallon jug, which I really don't need.

If I wanted to, I could spray this sucker in a dark clear cherry stain and be done with it but I'm sticking with my plan of going with white for the finish.

God bless you then - I am going with the same exact finish for my home build --- no grain filler (I like the textured "faded" style finish too!) and finished in white.

So I will be tuned in very closely - thanks for going first!
