My blind hate of strats

Re: My blind hate of strats

RB .... Richie Blackmore ???? when did he go bucker??? Does Uli have any buckered strats or its just his seven-string, I just realized that in scoprs he did play single coils .....

I wasn't clear enough, sorry. Stephen was referring to Joe's list of strat players.

Re: My blind hate of strats

hehe, Frusciante and other people make strats sound good on occasion ;)

In the end I'm not a big glass fan... and I prefer a twangier, surfier sort of sound which can be gotten from a Jag or JM (or even tele), if I need something more stratlike I pick up the Mustang, which is basically a heavier sounding, less glassy strat with a trem and switching that I like more :D Strats are a bit too smooth sounding for me....

On top of that I've never been too big on the feel, but like I said, they sound good on plenty of recordings ;)

Re: My blind hate of strats

It’s one thing to admit that you are not well suited for the Stratocaster, or vice versa. However, and IMO, saying that the Stratocaster is overrated is misguided and naïve. There is a reason it is the face of rock & roll and the electric guitar. When you mention the words “electric guitar” to anyone who doesn’t play guitar, I guarantee an image of a Stratocaster pops into their head. Its success as a guitar design is far from baseless.

that's why it is overrated, because it is the face of rock. It's really not that good of a guitar.....I think a lot of people go buying strats cause they like getting strats, not the actual guitar. If that makes sense at all.....

Ummm the ACTUAL GUITAR, in this situation, IS the Strat.. It's not like somebody gets the thought in their head, "Wow the Strat is the face of rock-n-roll, I should go to Guitar Center and drop a few thou on as many as I can get." No way man. I chose my Strat after hours of deliberation, price checking and comparing, and playing tons of guitars in the shop. I'd try SG's, jazz boxes, V's, Explorers, Telecasters, Les Pauls...but when I plugged in that black and white California Strat, my thought was, THAT'S how an electric guitar SHOULD sound!

The reason there are so many designs out there is so there's something for everybody. The reason most manufacturers copy Strats (including Ibanez, Jackson, Charvel, Paul Reed Smith, and Schecter) with slight variations, is because the Strat was perfect in the first place.

Next time you play one, don't think about Hendrix or Clapton or Cobain or Lennon or Guy or Vaughn or all the other legends who've rocked Strats. Think about you and what you need, and if you still don't like Strats...keep rockin those Duo's...or as i call 'em, 'strat-lites'

I just realized I phrased that in the worst possible way. :smack:

:laugh2: "strat-lites"

Re: My blind hate of strats

I have always had a love/hate relationship with Strats. I just can't seem to mesh with them. There have been a few exceptions; but all in all, I don't care for them.

Now, enter Robert Sherman's customized American Standard. That one, I plan on owning some day. It's exactly what I'm looking for. It felt so good and sounded so sweet when I played it through my rig. It just sang. Now, that really hasn't changed my mind about Strats; just his....

Re: My blind hate of strats

But doesn't that speak volumes for a Strat's overall customizability and diversity? His Strat's no different from any other...he just set it up the way he likes it.

Re: My blind hate of strats

The Bird is gonna weigh in here (*a hush befalls the crowd*):

Strats are fine. They sound awesome, are the most customizable, bar none, and are cheap for what you're getting. There's not much more I want than an old 60's beat up seafoam or sherwood strat. I REALLY want one of those.

But the thing is that, I'd rather have 10 guitars that all do one (different) thing perfectly than one guitar that does all 10 pretty well. I'd rather have an LP for the rock, a Tele for the twang, my Buddy for the rockabilly/tremolo, etc.

But strats are cool. Just too, I dunno, mainstream. And as you all may have noticed, I go out of my way to not own mainstream stuff. :)

Re: My blind hate of strats

I like Strats, I just can't play them. Something about the combination of a lack of a neck/body angle, scale length, control position, and picking position just doesn't agree with the way I play at all. I've owned a few Strats and other Strat-type guitars and ended up selling them all.

For an instrument that's touted to be the ultimate in player ergonomics, I find it to be the most uncomfortable guitar.

Re: My blind hate of strats

Yeah that's another thing. I find Teles and Les Pauls (LPs specifically) to be much more comfortable sitting down. They feel pretty perfect to me, strats feel alright but not great.

Re: My blind hate of strats

That's cool. Me, however, if I was teaching you guitar, I'd make you buy and use one for a month so that you have to learn them. You may be surprised that later you may like 'em.

Anyways, my philosophy is own one of each :D

I'm the same. Although I do think that sometimes avoiding mainstream can cause me to miss out on some cool guitars.

Re: My blind hate of strats

There are great Strats for many players. But i am not one of those players.
I hate the ergonomics. The Volume Pot position is just wrong for a hard hitting rythm guitarist!
The 21 fretts are not enough for me (yeah i play the 24. alot.i consider to get a 27 fretted 7 string guitar)

But if the Strat wheren't a good guitar ,we couldn't had Superstarts now.
So let the start away and get a superstrat! It's better!:)

BTW ,i agree with the high price thing! The electronics ,woods and the construction is not a grand worth!

Re: My blind hate of strats

Again, it's perfectly cool that strats don't work for you. Please understand, though, that there is a reason the stratocaster design earned and retained it's popularity, and that reason is far more complicated than because so-and-so played one. It's a versatile workhorse guitar with a platform open to more modification than any other design. It's above and beyond a jack-of-all-trades guitar... it'll do anything you want it to do, and it does many of those things as well as any guitar designed specifically for that role.
