My clones

Re: My clones

Sam, I gotta ask you "Why do you build a Marshall clone?"

Just kiddin' Sam, great stuff. Very impressive. Good to see you here. ;)

Sam:

I am really enjoying your many pics of circuit boards.

Congratulations on beautiful work !!

I noticed that many builders are using turret constuction. I am about to build my first amp (Champ clone) and decided quite a while ago (the building of this amp is a painfully slow process for me, due to many other time demands) to use eyelets. Are there many advantages to using turrets over eyelets, and what are the advantages?

Thanks again for posting all the great pics.

Re: My clones

Hey Sam
Of those, which is the the higher gain amp?

I built a Class A Champ clone that I love, but I played a Peavey JSX at GC a few weeks back that has me GASing.
I'd read about the AX84 diy stuff, which I'm thinking I want to keep doing, but have no idea which kits out there qualify as high gain.
Any info is appreciated.

Thanks
MM

for turrets you need a drill press to seat them and the correct tool ...... hoffmanamps.com has the tool and turrets

eyelets are more cumbersome and wou have to hold the board on the seating tool while using the other end of the seating tool in that same hand while using a hammer to seat it

you need a drill press for either

i prefer turrets cause they're easier to install

in fact, i use doug hoffman's layout for my amps

thanks for the compliments

the barney (purple) had way too much gain for me , i changed a few things in about 5 minutes to tone it down somewhat ...... that was a ax84 high octane preamp

now its about the same as the 2204, which has more than a true clone

my favorite is the superlead clone which has more gain than a true clone, with a tubescreamer it souds fabulous thru weber alnico speakers

all use anos/nos tubes ...... phillips(mullard), tungsram, tesla, siemens, sylvania, etc .......... i can't stand new production tubes

Re: My clones

Welcome, Sam. Are you an 18Watt.com refugee by any chance?

My 18 Watter is not really a clone, more like a mutant:

Re: My clones

Sam - I picked up on your Hoffman-style layouts right away. Nice work!

Do you by any chance have a layout of the Hi-Octane type amp that you could share? I've got the transformers for a 20W SEL project and would love to avoid re-inventing the wheel. I know the AX84 layouts work, just want to try Doug's approach because it makes sense to me.

Re: My clones

Nice work, Samwheat! I love seeing how kits have turned out. I'm gearing up for my first one, most likely a Mission 5E3. That will be my reference. After that, I'd love to do an 18 Watt tmb. May I ask which tube supplier you use?
